The printer might be going to sleep too soon. If it is the networkable Dell Laser printer, log into it (via the IP Address assigned by you router) and see what time before the printer goes to sleep.
I agree with Terry too, uninstall the printer and driver and restart and then plug it directly into the computer and let windows install the driver automatically

Kodak Easyshare 5300 printer will not print black

Print a self test diagnostic page to check the status of the black ink and print heads.

To print the self-test diagnostic page

Control panel: Press (Configuration Page button), or press and hold the (Cancel button) for 3 seconds.

For models that support networks: Press (Configuration Page button).

If these are all showing OK then clean the printheads

To clean the printheads
If printed characters are incomplete, or dots or lines are missing from printouts, ink nozzles might be clogged and you might need to clean the printheads.

NOTE: Cleaning uses ink, so clean the printheads only when necessary.

The cleaning process takes up to 3.5 minutes. Some noise might be generated in the process.
Control panel: Press and hold (Power button), press (Cancel button) two times, press (Resume button) one time, and release (Power button).

If this fails then replace the black cartridge and run a clean cycle again and then a self test diagnostic then try printing again.

The printer continues to print after cancel button is pressed.

If this happens often and then eventually you are able to get back to work. I'll explain how these printers work.

When you send a print task to the printer, the data that is the construct for your document it resides on the printer in a temporary storage location called RAM. Once the instructions and the data are in RAM hitting the Cancel button will not have an effect until there is a break in the program execution to print. Sometimes nearly all the document will print before it cancels and this may take some time. The Cancel command must intercept a line of prgram execution. So just be patient.

If you need to immediately stop printing for some reason, the best thing is to pull the plug on the printer. Leave it unplugged for some time. As you put the power plug back in, press and Hold Cancel until the printer finishes the startup self check test, otherwise it may just pickup where it left off.

If this is a problem where no matter what you do, and the unplug replug while holding down the Cancel button doesn't clear your problem, unplug the printer again and look next to the digital clock at the bottom right of the PC screen. You may see an icon for your printer there. Double click that and you should see all the printer tasks listed in the printer que. Select all of those and then drop the file menu down and select cancel all or delete all.

Any question I didn't cover, please use the Text Box Comment area below to ask me another question.
