DO NOT , I repeat do not use starting fluid on a 2 stroke chainsaw or trimmer. you will score the cylinder or the piston. When trying to diagnose a hard to start motor just give it a small squirt of mix in the carburetor. If it won't fire you have a compression problem or an ignition problem. when you test for spark make sure you have a good plug, that is well grounded and not in bright sunlight which can make it hard to see the spark. if you have spark, do a compression test.

Eugene's comprssion check suggestion is great. Check for a clogged air filter. Next, try a little quirt of quick start spray (Ether). Still NO GO? If she fires but doesn't run, then you've confirmed that the spark is OK. If the saw has sat for several months, you could be dealing with "sticky", congealed fuel. Get a bottle of SeaFoam. Flush out the old gas. Add 1 oz of SeaFoam and fill the tank with fresh gas. Give it another shot of quick start. (I recently had a bout of "sticky" gas in my tiller. I got it running on quick start, but it quit after a half hour and wouldn't start - even with quick start. So the compression had gone flat. Removing he head I found the intake valve suck open - STICKY GAS !!!)

A pull the muffler and either a struck ring or badly piston and cylinder.
Alternatively you can do a compression check as you need at least 100 psi for it to start.

Seems my Poulan Chainsaw P3314 is flooding.

Ron, the excessive gas could be the result of continued start attempts with a weak spark or a bad plug or a carboned plug. If none of the carb adjustments have not been turned or twisted prior, I'd suggest obtaining a fresh spark plug. Make sure the gap is correct. Blow out the cylinder with compressed air to vent all the residual gas/oil within. Ground the new plug against the engine and pull the cord. You should observe a fairly bright spark at the plug. If no spark you could have a faulty coil/ignition module. If a bright spark is present, install the plug and give it full choke and attempt to start. It should attempt to start within a few pulls....when it does, go immediately to HALF-choke and pull again and it should start.

Poulan 18" wildthing chainsaw wont start

have you tried spraying Starter fluid into the Carb to see if it will at least try to run and verify you have good spark?

I have a poulon pro 42cc saw that wont start. dont think its getting gas cuz i tried to flood it with the primer but no gas on the spark plug.

The primer will not flood it, all the primer does on these saws is pushes fuel through the carb. If this is a new saw, it needs a carb adjustment, a very common problem on poulan products these days. It's covered by the warranty at any of their service dealers (you can locate one on poulan's website).
How old is the gas you are using? If the mixture is more than 30 days old, make a new mix and try again.
Check for spark. Pull the boot off of the plug. Hold the boot near something metal and pull the starter. If you see a spark, you are good. If you don't, you may have a problem with the coil.

I have a poulan pp3816 pro 38cc that leaks gas out the muffler

Its either well flooded, or the carb needle is leaking, remove the spark plug, with the ignition switch off crank the engine to evacuate any fuel left in the cylinder, leave the machine for a couple of hours, re fit the plug and try to start useing no choke, if it still does not start, remove the spark plug again, rest it on top of the cylinder ( away from the spark plug hole ) crank the engine and check for a spark, if it has a good spark and the plug is soaked with fuel it could be a carb needle leaking, remove the carb, remove the metering cover held with four screws, replace the rubber tipped needle.

My saw would not keep running when turned sideways, so i put a carb kit in it, now it will not start. The plug has alot of gas on it. the plug has a weak spark. Could the weak spark be the problem or too...

Check the fuel filter, air cleaner, and muffler for plugging. Poulan saws seem to have too much clearance between the ignition module and the flywheel magnets which causes weak spark. Remove the left side cover to expose the flywheel and ignition module. Turn the flywheel until the magnets are just under the module poles, insert a thin business card into the module gaps, loosen the module screws to allow the module to contact the magnets. Tighten the screws, and rotate the flywheel somewhat to remove the card. Rotate the flywheel one full turn to make sure the gaps don't close up at any point. Recheck for spark which should be blue and snappy (clean plug gapped at 0.020"). Try for start--if it is flooding the spark plug, retrace your repairs to the carburetor, especially the diaphragm in the lower chamber. Go to: www.drystacked.com for a 12 page article on Walbro brand carburetor theory and troubleshooting. This information applies to other brands as well in a general way. Hope this helps!

When I pull the rope to start it the engine doesn't want to turn

Remove the spark plug and retry pulling the engine through. If it spits out a fair quantity of liquid fuel, you have a flooding condition in the carburetor--usually a defective lower chamber diaphragm. If it still wont turn, then suspect that the engine has been run on straight gasoline without admixed oil--bad news!!. If this is so, it will have ruined the cylinder, piston, and ring(s) at a minimum. Compare labor and new parts against another comparable saw. Hope this helps and good luck!

Have a Poulan saw that will not start. It is getting fuel and spark. Could it be the mixture ratio of gas to oil?

I am going to make the following assumptions:
1. It is a Poulan PP4218(WeDoNotCare), start procedure the same.
2. You removed and verified there is spark (plug replacement recommended). The plug is dry (not flooded).
3. With the saw at waist height; the starter handle held; and the saw released. It remains against the starter handle or VERY slowly lowers with a distinctive pause during each compression stroke.

OM follows:

Type just the model numbers (choose the suffix after the list is provided).

It needs spark, fuel, and compression to run.
An overly rich mixture should not keep it from starting.
To much or to little fuel will (most start problems)!

The start procedures are on pages 9 and 10.
STARTING A COLD ENGINE
If the engine is cold - Please read the second NOTE: before trying to start.
If warm – read the DIFFICULT STARTING (or starting a flooded engine). I would try it with choke closed first (Pull to full choke; push to off choke). Hard starting is almost always flooded on a 2-cycle engine. You can prime all you like; priming does not inject the fuel mix into the carburetor. It circulates mix from the fuel tank through the carburetor and returns any excess to the tank.

If it never attempts to start and the plug is not wet.
1. Turn off the ignition.
2. Remove the air filter.
3. Pull the choke to full choke, push it fully open.
4. Put one teaspoon of fuel mix (40:1) into carburetor throat, reinstall air filter.
5 Turn on ignition.
6. Pull starter.
If it sputters or tries to start and dies there is a fuel delivery problem. Reply below with what you found and I will help repair that too.

I hope you found this helpful. If you have questions or need additional assistance you can reply below. Good Luck
