Question about Sharp LL-172CB (Black) 17 in. Flat Panel LCD Monitor

Any good resources so that I can learn to repair FPDs?

I work as a tech for an educational institution and we have numerous Gateway (brand) FPDs that have either lamp or inverter issues. I would love to repair these myself. Do you know of any good resources so that I can learn to do so?
Thanks very much!!!

Re: any good resources so that I can learn to repair...

Fun projects, I have fixed a few LCD monitors. Most of the issues are Bad CCFL's or the Inverter board. You can buy CCFL's all over the web and ebay. Just do a search on google. There are other project people have done to replace the CCFL's with LED's.

The inverter is easy for me, I have an electronics background. 12VDC going in and AC coming out. 3 major parts to the inverter. Circuit protection, most likely a fuse, can be surface mount. Transistors, which convert the DC current to AC current, should be 2 of them to perform this task. Transformer, this is used to step-up the voltage. 12V is not enough to drive the lamps, you need something like 50VAC, the transformer will take care of that. Transformers rarely go bad. The components that take the most hits is the transistors or the fuses. It could be other IC's but, look for a fuse first, its the cheapest and easiest.

I can not say this enough, GOOGLE, GOOGLE, and GOOGLE. Very good search engine to research just about anything.

So if you are up to it, learn some soldering and basic electronics.

You should try out another monitor with this PC to make sure it does not have video card problem.
Monitor repair is about $100, so it is not worth it if it is the monitor problem.

Slow coming on. Blank screen until you press the on button a few times

guest, If you do not have any time to explore (investigate, read) then trade your old unit for new!! If that not option you wish to take , then read fixya monitor profiles of "louie12fix" , "budmrtn", "buddymc" and other tech's that specialize in repair of "cold-cathode-fluorescent-lamp back-lit lcd monitors. Follow all "links" you find in the profiles and view some video clips on YOUTUBE that deal with "lcd monitor disassembly" and "lcd monitor repair" to learn just WHY your unit acts the way it does. Why don't you try the "flashlight-test" that EVERY owner of an lcd monitor should know when a BLACK or BLANK screen shows up when it shouldn't be there in the first place. My best guess is that your monitor's problem is internal to unit and not a software problem. 12fixlouie Bye for now

My monitor does not turn on and the power button light keeps blinking

elvisy71, If different monitor will display the Win-desktop screen with no problem, then Gateway 2275w will need you or qualified electronics technician to possibly repair a defective internal "switch-mode-power-supply" / CCFL inverter supply" !! Check the status of unit warranty first, and check to see if Gateway has a swap-out (exchange+cash) program. If that dosen't work you will be doing a lot of reading about DIY lcd monitor fixes. You will also need to view some DIY video clips at YOUTUBE on "lcd monitor disassembly" and "lcd monitor repair" that will help you decide what to do about your now BLACK or BLANK n BLACK screen unit. You can find tons of DIY stuff here on fixya in my and other CCFL back-lit lcd monitor tech's fixya profiles. Elvis, remember this! Your 2275w isn't any different than any other brand of ccfl back-lit lcd display in it's basic design and operation and some can be DIY repaired for under $6 in parts cost. Just do some reading of the higher numbered (>16) pages in my fixya profile and my old profile "louie12fix" and follow the web links you find there. If this was of some help to you please come back to fixya and rate this response and tell me and all the other black screen lcd owners what you are planning to do about your monitor. 12fixlouie 42610

Power button flashes only when pluged in. Is the power supply bad

kennykg38 Power supply might be good or might be half good, half bad. Three different voltages (+5vdc or 3.3vdc and 12dc to 15vdc and 500vac to 1100vac) need to be produced by the smps/ccfl inverter supply. The low 3.3 or 5vdc used for vga to lcd panel digital stuff. 12 to 15vdc is converted to hi ac to light-up cold-cathode-fluorescent-lamps hung on reverse side of lcd panel so you can see all the pretty colors of text and graphics. If pc works with "known-good" monitor, then your "black" or "blank n black" unit could need servicing of it's SMPS/CCFL inverter. Remember this! Your brand of monitor isn't any different than any other brand of cold cathode fluorescent lamp back-lit lcd monitor in it's basic design and operation. Just do some reading and follow links you find in my and other fixya lcd monitor tech's profiles so you can make decision on just what will be the best thing to do about your "black screen" unit. I hope this was of some help to you. 12fixlouie

Black screen

At this point I believe there are failed caps in your monitor.

This is very common in all LCD monitors. Did the tech just push the power switch off and on?
From my experience at fixing broken monitors of all brands, I think it is the power supply problem.

You can get second help from repair shop also.

My monitor power on then cut off what can i do

Hi there,
I had the same problem with the exact same model of Gateway 19" LCD. Likely this is the same issue you're experiencing, and I hope you're able enough with a multi-meter and soldering iron to fix this issue, or willing enough to tear this thing down to its components and at least try to fix it.... otherwise you have a fancy dead-weight object on your hands/desk.

In my case, the 5V power was fried so I actually inserted a 5V 2A power supply inside the monitor housing and soldered the +5V and GND leads to the marked connector pins that connect the power board(larger) to the vga signal board(much smaller). I stripped the guts from the 5V power supply so it would fit easier, and then stole power from the 120v monitor input and directly wired that to the wires that were hooked to the 120v power supply prongs(after removing those prongs as well). The monitor looks and functions as if it were brand new, there's nothing extra hanging out and no bulges anywhere. It works excellent.

Aside from my more-so hackful approach, here's some links and quotes, from other sites, from people who know what components to replace on the power board and still achieve a well-working end result.

My fpd 1730 moniters brightness and contrast are terrible, and i cant get the controls to work

nonnie707, It is very possible that your monitor's internal or external (lay on floor) "switch-mode-power-supply" has a problem. Prove that your pc is working by connecting KNOWN GOOD monitor to your pc!!! If you are not electronics technician then you will need to question Gateway as to warranty service or possible swapout for a REFURBISHED unit if your unit is deemed as premature failure. May cost $ for swap. READ my FIXYA profile and that of other FIXYA TECH's (buddymc, budmrtn) for more options as to "what to do"!!! Remember, If very strange and weird things start to happen (occur) with "cold-cathode-fluorescent-lamp" backlit LCD display, the first place I would investigate would be the units "switch-mode-power-supply" Good luck with the repair. 12fixlouie

Hd display gateway monitor is working but has no signal

If this is still under warranty, then Gateway (MPC) can repair this. Probably you homeowners insurance will pay for it. Make sure that the monitor data cable is plugged in correctly. Whenever we have storm my wife unplugs all the cables on the computer. Sometimes when we reconnect they get plugged into an inactive port, thus no pic. If none of these help then please contact me at and we can discuss a repair plan.
