I could not find a manual or support on Ativa website but I searched their FAQ. It said that the shredder basket must be fully closed and integrated with the shredder. I had the same problem. I pushed the basket firmly into place and it stopped. I believe this flashing scheme may be telling you that the shredder and basket aren't properly aligned.
Check the Power
Ensure that the shredder top is firmly placed in the shredder basket if the unit will not operate. If the top is not in place the feeder will not work and accept any paper. Make sure it is firmly plugged into the wall outlet and that the outlet is active.
Rest the Shredder
Let the shredder cool down if the shredder has been running continuously for a long time. It may have overheated and needs to be left in the off position for at least 30 minutes to reset. Verify the basket is empty or not too full as that will cause the shredder to deactivate.
Clear Paper Jam
Rotate the shredder into "Auto" and reverse to loosen any paper jam that is stopping the gears. Pull out any papers that are sticking out from the shredder feeder. If there is no progress then unplug the shredder and remove the shredder top from the bin. Turn it upside down and use tweezers to free any paper that is blocking the gear.
Auto Mode Not Working
Select the "Auto" option and feed paper into the center of the feeder tray if the shredder is only working in reverse mode. The sensor is located in the middle of the feeder tray and could be blocked by jammed paper. Use an index card to firmly unblock any paper that could be blocking the sensor.
Check to see if there's a little piece that broke off from the door. This would be the "safety interlock switch" or little thingy that pushes down the basket sensor. The basket sensor is located on the bottom front of the shredder. I bent a paper clip to hold down the metal switch (basket sensor) and taped it to the front of the shredder with scotch tape.
Try to reset the shredder.----
Toggle the On/Off switch at the back few times times. Then see if it gets reset.--------Toggling it on and off to reset the shredder. Make sure to pull out the paper bin while you toggle the power switch on and off a dozen or so times and then put the basket paper bin back in place. When you power the unit back on the forward button should work again and the shredder should feed paper through properly.------Another procedure is Using the power switch in the back, power on with the blue button and keep press forward till it worked.-------Turning the off/on switch multiple times mostly helps.------This will help.Thanks.Helpmech.
Most probably the safety switch is preventing it from turning on. Try neatly and firmly closing the paper basket door/opening; see if any paper bits got stuck somewhere, preventing the switch from being deactivated.
Sounds like the waste basket is not pushed all the way in. Your basket will have a piece of plastic (not in the middle, this is just a guide) probably on the right hand edge of the basket. This little piece of plastic pushes in on the safety switch. Take a flash light and look closely and you will see how this works. Take a Q-Tip and push in on this switch and see if it will power up.
I had this same problem. This is what I did to fix it.
When I went to ShredCare.com (the recommended web site for technical support of this particular shredder), I read that 'Most models of shredders have a safety interlock switch that is activated by the basket.' Upon looking closely at my basket and the shredder, I found this safetly interlock switch and made sure to align it with the proper position within the basket. There is only ONE way to place the shredder on the basket and have this safety interlock switch activated. The switch is located on the underside of the shredder. Align this switch with the ridge on the inside of the basket. Listen carefully and you will hear the switch 'click' when in the right position. Mine is very touchy. I've even had to press in on the side of the basket while shredding to make sure that the ridge and the switch are making contact.
