Once upon a time, computer commands were entered a text. It was the days of DOS, not Windows. You typed commands next to a blinkiing cursor. You did not have all this point and click an icon and your program activates.

Very roughly speaking, A GUI installer attaches a Graphic (such as an icon) to the program so that all you have to do is point and click to make it work. So, on one hand, you can have a graphic, that is a picture, to work with or if the program does not have a GUI, then you probably have to use a command line. When you see a DOS Prompt, you are looking at a command line rather than a graphic interface.

How to configure FreeNas

Not sure that I understand your question right, but the non-gui part during the installation only refers to the networking setup. If you want to set up your NAS with a static IP see here.
A general walk through the installation (including photos) is here.

Why do you want to use FreeNAS on ubuntu in the first place? Why not using ubuntu 10.04 server or (my first choice) CentOS 5.x or 6.2 (initial network setup is a little bit tricky on 6.x, but tons of documentation on the net by now). Cent is super stable and you can easily run it without a gui. I use ssh to do whatever I have to do on the box (It's a 8TB backup server.)

Let me know if you have any questions or would like to discuss - I'm happy to help.

Just installed Ubuntu Server. I need a graphical user interface, and downloaded one but computer still boots to dos-like interface. I don't know Linux commands. How to get GUI?

1-If you are presented with the command line after Linux boots, And after you login and end up at the command line prompt, you Type:
STARTX
The above command start up the GUI from the command line, and Get you in the Graphic GUI environment of Linux.
2-If you Linux computer start up with the GUI, and you are Taken to the desktop environment, there is a way to access the Linux command line.
From your desktop, you can go trough the startup menu and choose the " TERMINAL", and this will let you access the Command line. You will end you with a windows with the Command prompt from within the desktop.
In summary, accessing the command line interface or the GUI Can both be done on your Linux computer, weather your system is Setup to start with the Shell interface or the GUI.

Blank screen on startup

If the laptop runs OK apart from that, I suspect the GUI has been switched off. Switching off the GUI will speed up the boot process but nothing else.
Click start and type msconfig in the search window. Browse the menu and check the GUI box.
Re start your laptop and the start screen will re appear.

No GUI on startup.

Try a repair installation.
Is this an illegal copy? If it is, it may have virus or malware problems.

Hi,
The GUI stands for Graphical-User-Interface.
This is the Programs interface, that will allow you to see and use its functions.
