Garmin nuvi 360 power problem

The cigarette lighter charger will no longer charge the battery or power the unit. I checked the fuse and it appears to be okay. Do I need to replace the cable? Or is the problem with the battery? And it looks like the cradle disconnects from the cable, but no matter how hard I pull, I can't seem to get it apart. So maybe I'll need to replace both?

Actually, it doesn't work any better when plugged into the car charger. It works exactly the same as when it is unplugged. Which is, it turns on, and I am able to use the touch screen to choose a location, but before it finds a satellite signal, it shuts off. This reminds me of my digital camera, which *does* need a new battery. I can turn it on, and take a picture or two, and then it turns itself off. Wait awhile, and there's enough juice to take another pic or two. The difference I see is that with my camera, it only runs on battery power. But with the Garmin, even if the battery is dead, the unit *should* operate perfectly when plugged into the car charger. So that's why I think that the problem is with the charger, or the cradle which connects the charger to the unit. Unless, the unit runs off the battery all the time, even when plugged in, in which case, if the battery is bad, then the unit would not work even when plugged in. Any thoughts?

I have a similar problem in that I can power-up my Garmin but as soon as it gets past the "Boot Up" screen it shuts off. I don't know if it's a battery problem or what as I only used it for approx. 20 mins then it went dead on me. There does not seem to be a "Low Battery" indicator (which would be really helpful) so I can't say if that's the issue.

Update: Bought a new cigarette lighter cable, cradle, and USB cable. Unit still does not work when plugged into cigarette lighter, but works when plugged into computer, and does not shut itself off. It's able to get a sat. signal and everything when plugged into computer. I'm beginning to think that there's something wrong within the unit, since I've exhaused all external options.

Thanks. Home A/C adapter (if there ever was one) and owner's manual are lost. Unit appears to hold a charge when plugged into USB cable. What else could it be? Something internal? I'm going to download the owner's manual. Thanks.

Suggesting that a fuse is blown in the vehicle is a good one. Unfortunately, I've tried making it work in three different vehicles. And I'm positive that one of them has a working cigarette lighter, b/c my Magellan is working in that vehicle.

My Nuvi 360 dies rapidly - yet shows 1 section of battery left. Charger ( same as Blackberry) is charging that phone ok - I swop them over. Can you change a Garmin battery - should NEVER have got rid of Tom Tom far superior unit!
This battery lark after 2 years 95,000 miles - where do I get a UK replacement?

"Open the case by removing the retaining screws, then carefully prying the unit apart"

Having taken apart & repaired numerous Nuvi 350/360's, the above comment for dissassembly is not enough information and could result in a damaged antenna flex cable, making the unit a nice $200.00 paper weight.

If your nuvi will charge when attached to your computer but won't charge when in your vehicle even with a new cable etc, maybe, just maybe, your 12v power port (cigatette lighter) has a blown fuse.

I note that you make no mention as to what the Battery Icon (contained on the Menu Screen of your Nuvi and as shown on pg 1 of the Owners Manual downloadable from indicates or what happens when you plug it into your house current via the AC charger which comes in the box with the Nuvi 350. If you don't have an AC charger your Nuvi is being charged when it is connected to your computer via the USB port. Leaving it connected to either power source for a couple of hours and checking the Battery Icon should tell you whether or not your battery will hold a charge. Further info on your Batttery Icon is contained on pg 64 of the Owner's Manual

You'll need to open the case and replace the battery. Batteries can be purchased online here or a couple other places on the web by searching for "nuvi 360 replacement battery". I'd get the 1400mah or greater for a replacement, it'll burn a little longer than the weaker models. If the unit operates when plugged into the charger, then the fuse and cable are good. Open the case by removing the retaining screws, then carefully prying the unit apart. The new battery simply plugs into the connector after removing the old one.

Why don't you try changing the battery, as I suggested over a month
ago? You've now spent money on chargers, adapters, etc, etc. Some
electronics are simply designed in a manner in which they will not
operate with a bad battery, since the battery is in a circuit with the
voltage regulator that supplies the charge, and power to the unit. Furthermore, rating a solution as "Thanks for Trying" BEFORE YOU'VE EVEN TRIED IT is absurd!!! Good luck, buddy.

I've borrowed a friend's Garmin for a trip and when I use the car charger, it doesn't display anything. Once I disconnect, it becomes visible again. I'm going on a long trip and worry. ...

Assuming there is power at the cigarette lighter jack - turn the Nuvi off - then connect the charger. It should display charging battery or charging complete.
If nothing - does it charge with the wall charger? If so check the fuse in the car charger - it's usually in the tip of the charger which can be turned to get the fuse out.

Garmin says low battery and now will not work in the car. Does this Garmin have a battery inside the unit that I have to replace?

There is a battery in the satnav but it's not user replaceable. It can only be replaced by returning it to Garmin. Before sending it away to replace the battery you could check the following;

  • Have you the satnav connected to the charger?
  • If it's connected to the charger is the cigarette lighter socket working. You can check by plugging in another device to see if it works
  • If the cigarette lighter socket is working and the battery of the satnav is not charging it's possible that the fuse in the plug, that goes into the cigarette lighter socket, is blown.
To change the fuse;
Unscrew the ring that's at the end of the plug and the plug comes apart. Be careful not to lose the silver coloured tip. When the plug comes apart you can take out the fuse and get a replacement at any car accessory shop or a shop that sells garmin satnavs.

If you have to return your satnav to garmin you can find their contact details at

Nuvi will not charge when plugged into car charger but will charge when plugged into house charger

  1. Check that the cigarette lighter socket is working. If not it may be a fuse blown in the fuse-board.
  2. In the charger plug, that goes into the cigarette lighter there is a fuse which may be blown. At the tip of the plug you'll see a ring. On most chargers it's silver but some are black. Unscrew the ring and the plug will come apart. Take care not to lose the small metal tip when you open it. Replace the fuse. If there's power going to the charger and this fuse is replaced your problem should be solved.

When using wire in car, Garmin won't turn on, it starts, shows a low battery sign and shuts down. Was working fine on recent trip. It seems no power is reaching GPS. Nuvi 765T

Most likely the fuse in the charger plug has blown. The plug that goes into the cigarette lighter socket has a ring near the end. On most chargers it's silver but some of them are black. If you unscrew this ring the plug comes apart. Be careful not to lose any parts. You'll see the fuse in there. Replace it and it should be ok.
The other possibility is that the cigarette lighter socket is not working. You can check that easily enough by trying something else in it.

My garmin charges with my computer but stopped charging in the car

The most obvious answer is a possible blown fuse in the cigarette lighter socket or the in the tip of the charger plug. Most charger plug fuses are accessed by unscrewing the metal tip. Check both for good fuses.

If this doesn't solve the problem, make sure the points of contact between the charger, cradle and GPS are all free of dirt and grime. Don't forget to vacuum the cigarette lighter socket - especially if it is used as a lighter, too.

Don't work with the cigarette lighter connector

Check if you are able to charge other devices via the cigarette lighter such as a cellphone or try to use the lighter if the light does not get as hot as normal then that means that there is not enough power. If that looks ok then try another cable charger for your Nuvi

First time use / battery charge

The Nuvi units are short on battery life and therefore Garmin has given you a connector other then USB to power your unit while in a car. You need to carry that. It's just a design flaw. If you try to rely on the battery of your Garmin Nuvi, you have less than 2 hours even on a full charge. And carrying the USB adapter which plugs into the cigarette lighter socket won't allow your unit to run while charging. so you need to take the adapter charger bracket that comes with the unit if you need it for longer trips.
