If it's not blinking it one of: The PHD (Print Head Device), or belt unit, life is coming to an end. Clean the CTD sensor. Try to clean the CTD sensor with a dry cotton swab. The sensor is located on the front cover (inside).

What is the ctd sensor? it says it needs to be cleaned

Hi!

The CTD is the Automatic Density Sensor. Below is a step by step on how to perform nearly all maintenance procedures for the 5100 series (Including how to clean the CTD sensor)
Should be just what you're looking for.

Hope this helps!

I had a 'clean the ctd sensor' error. Cleaned it now it prints half the page in watercolors.

I had a clean the ctd sensor problem as well, as a problem with toner that I had ordered. The problem for me was that with Dell, when I called for support, the young lady on the other end of the phone although nice, was difficult to understand, and did not clearly define how you get to the ctd sensor.
After much prayer, (seriously!) I finally figured out how to get to the area I needed. With Dells instructions, I took the fuser out, thinking it was the transfer roller. The fuser is NOT the transfer roller, the transfer roller in the item that you see when you open the front entirely and look straight down. The difference is that the fuser is the first item out and has lift up blue tabs, while the transfer roller has blue tabs on each side that must click into place to hold and position the transfer roller properly. Once you get this out the ctd sensor is easily accessible, and can be cleaned. After, getting the ctd cleaned, and then replacing the bad toner cartridge, my machine once again worked.
