My 2008 mazda 6 gt 3.0 engine does hiccups only at red lights (low idlw). My cel light on my dashboard is on confirming there is a problem. Could a cel diagnostic done at a garage would specificly fiure out the problem or would it give out just a ballpark figure? I don't want an unrelyable mechanic to tell me i have a gasket problem when it's actually a sprak plug , coil or any costly guess from that mechanic. Can the cel pinpoint the problem?

An OBD reader is the tool that is used to read the codes when the CEL comes on. Big autoparts stores like autozone read them for free. That code will tell you what the problem is but not exactly how to fix the issue.

A key symbol on dashboard and lights are not working

Whenever this warning light or any other stays on in the dash it is indicating that the systems control module (or the system sensor in the case of lights like low oil pressure, door open indicators etc.) has detected a fault, it then disables the system (this applies to ABS,TCS, TCM, SRS, TPMS, MIL, CEL and BCM faults and others) as long as the light is on. You must now have the dealer hook up a special electronic diagnostic tool and "scan" the system for the fault code that is stored for the problem(s)

Legend of Abbreviations. ABS Anti-lock brake system. TCS Traction control system, TCM Transmission control module, SRS Supplemental restraint system, BCM Body control module. TPMS Tire Pressure Monitor System, MIL Malfunction Indicator Lamp, CEL Check Engine Light.

After having my fuel pump replaced in a '92 Mazda Protege DX, the CEL is on. My mechanic said that it's common and should go off in a few days. It didn't. He checked for codes with the OBD1 and...

You mean even with taking the battery off for a few minutes, the light comes back on? That is after all how to erase codes and turn the light off with OBD-1.

Maybe he means the wire from the ecm up to the dash for the CEL signal. Maybe that wire is getting current from another wire in the wiring harness.

Find put where the hissing noise is coming from, you have a vacuum leak. Fix that , and everything else will be fixed. After you fix it, disconnect the battery for 5 minutes to reset the computer and fuel trims.

Reset check engine light

First of all, you should'nt do this unless you know what the problem is.. or what tripped it. I had this problem when my husband and I were replacing a head unit and disconnected the old head unit, a/c and other stuff then turn the car on. This made the light flash. The first time we took it in and got charged $50 to reset it. The second time we did this procedure and it worked.

ECU Resetting Procedures

Timing is extremely critical. If it is NOT DONE within the specify time, the ECU will not reset and the Check Engine Light (CEL) will continue to remain ON.
A stop watch or an analog clock with a second’s needle will be useful.

Reset Check Engine Light Procedures

1. Confirm that accelerator pedal is fully released, turn ignition switch “ON” and wait 3 seconds.
2. Repeat the following steps (2a and 2b) procedures quickly five times within 5 seconds.
2a. Fully depress the accelerator pedal (HARD).
2b. Fully release the accelerator pedal.
3. Wait 7 seconds, fully depress the accelerator pedal and keep it for approx. 10 seconds until the CEL starts blinking.
4. Fully release the accelerator pedal (while the CEL is still blinking)
5. Wait about 10 seconds.
6. Fully depress the accelerator pedal and keep it for more than 10 seconds.
7. Fully release the accelerator pedal (The CEL light will continue to blink).
8. Turn ignition switch to “OFF” position and now you can start the car. The CEL light should be gone.

If the CEL light continues to remain ON, repeat the above steps. Timing is EXTREMELY critical to resetting the ECU.
