No filter like you think the sandy residue is from the detergent and that is because your water is not hot enough.

SOURCE: my whirlpool gold doesnt clean properly there is a sandy residue

Sounds like you have a calcium issue with your water. if you have a water softner time to get it serviced. also you can get a cleaner for the dishwasher to clean it out called Dishwasher Magic.

SOURCE: we get a gritty / sandy residue. what can I do?

The cause may not be your dishwasher.
Especially hard water may leave the residue. If you don't have that problem when you hand-wash, then check your pipes. Homes more than 40 years old may have galvanized pipes that eventually rust on the inside. The grit could be grains of rust from the pipes. If you do have galvanized pipes (rather than copper) then you may need to replace them. You could put in a filter as a temporary work-around, but that will eventually clog with the gritty material.

Usually this issue is related to drain issues. Check for plugged screens and filters. also look for kinked drain hose. Does the hose route to just under the counter, and then back DOWN do the drain hook up? If not, you can have backflow.

Sandy glasses

Are you making sure your heater is ok??Water temp should be taken and be 120 or hotter. If its not turn up water heater temperature. If heating coil is not working replace it.It provides the heat to the D/W and aids in the heated Dry cycle. The solution for spotted/foggy glass problems all  start with making sure your water is Hot enough.Rinse aid is the second.

I have sand in tall glasses when washed on the top shelf

jalexandruna the lid you opened on the dispenser that has 1-6 is where you pour in the rinse aid. As to if it will help or not, this sand issue may be hard water. Try using a eviromentally friendly detergent which is high in Citric Acid. Or try running a dishwasher cleaner like Dishwasher Magic thru the dishwasher to clean this residue out. Hope this helps
