Re: inoperative dvd drive

Try removing the dvd software and reinstalling it. I had this happen on a Sony Vaio and then after the computer crashed and I reinstalled everything, the dvd player worked. I tried downloading updates for the WinDvd software, but that didn't fix it. If the cdrom unit is bad, then it is a lost cause and too pricey to replace, unless you get a scrap part laptop.

Click start control panel administration tools computer management device manager scroll down cd-dvd rom drives you might see a yellow question /exclamation mark ? ! or a red X right click to update driver You might have to physically unplug the leads for this cd/dvd computer then plug them back in restart your this should activate the found new hardware wizard. If this does not fix the problem it might be a registry problem "you only need to do the following" if you cant see your disk drive in windows explorer Close all open programs Click on Start, Run, and type regedit and press Enter Click on the plus signs (+) next to the following folders HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SYSTEM CurrentControlSet Control Class {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} This folder is the DVD/CD-ROM Drive Class Description in the registry. Look for any of the following names in the right hand column. Upper Filters Lower Filters Upper Filters.bak Lower Filters.bak If any of the above keys shown in step 4 are listed, right-click on them and choose Delete

After deleting the keys, close the registry editor
Reboot your computer
Open My Computer and check to see if your CD or DVD drives have returned. You may also want to open Device Manager and verify that the yellow exclamation and error code on the CD or DVD drive is gone. Hope this helps. if this fails to fix the problem

It could be a problem with the lens you could use a liquid type lens cleaner place 2-3 drops on top of a cd/dvd then run it

My DVD has stopped working. The only thing that it will do is open and close the tray. I have reloaded the driver. No help. I want to remove it from the computer how do I do that. It is a Toshiba...

Power down your laptop. Remove A/C and battery. On the bottom of the laptop a screw about 5+ inches from center of the DVD drive holds it in. Straighten a paper clip and put it in the small hole in door of the tray, that should manually release the tray like pushing the button when laptop is powered up. Pull on the tray and it should come out. Hope that helps..

Hp pavilion dv9000 cd rom not burning dvd-s. cd burning ok, dvd reading ok

you need to state what operating system you use.

but if cd-rom is burning cd's and not dvd's this is usually problem with software, you need to state what software you are using to burn dvd's as well, seem like you do not choose correct driver in your burn software settings.

Lost DVD drive

Try removing the player from your laptop and rebooting without it. Shut it down and put the player back in then restart again. That should force windows to reinstall it. If it's not seen when rebooting the device is probably bad.

Go to your device manager and delete your CD/DVD drive from the list, then reboot your PC. If the drive is functioning as normal then it will reinstall it's self upon reboot. Then try to see if it will read.

Cannot open cd-rom drive!

The thing about cd/dvd drives in general is that they die and thats the case here even if you deleted anything of the operating system its self would notice that the cd drive was missing the driver and ask you about it since you havent stated that its safe to say that the drive is dead

Install Window XP into Eee PC without external DVD drive?

Each computer needs its own operating system in which you do you have linux as a pre-install. If you want XP, you will need an external dvd/cd rom drive. It is worth it if you think about it...running xp, you're bound to run into other software you will likely need in the future, so getting an external cd/dvd drive would not be a waste of your money.
