On an Apple system, this is an indication that it thinks there is little or no battery left and goes to sleep to protect data loss. Your battery might be going bad (showing a full charge, but lasting for only a few minutes) or there may be a problem with your power supply.

To help with getting your battery to charge, try resetting the PMU

The Power Manager (PMU) is an integrated circuit (computer chip) that is usually on the logic board of your Mac computer.

It is responsible for power management of the computer. It controls backlighting, hard disk spin down, sleep and wake, some charging aspects, trackpad control, and some input/output as it relates to the computer sleeping.

• If the computer is on, turn it off.
• Now refer to this article from Support
Resetting the PMU for Powerbook and iBooks

If this process does not help to allow your battery to charge normally, you more than likely have a battery which may be either dead or eventually will die in its charge capability.

What I would recommend if that is the case, would be to consider purchasing a new battery from Apple or via a third party reseller like online Apple authorized resellers like, or Fry's Electronics for example. You may also Google with keywords "purchase iBook battery " and shop for the best priced iBook battery.

Again, you would only consider the latter, if the former procedure listed above does not help.

I hope this helps.

I just got an ibook laptop and it just shut down on me. It has a light somewhat blinking but i dont know whats going on. Ity doesnt turn on. do you know what theproblem might be?

It could be that it has gone to sleep. If you press any key on the keyboard it should wake up. To set the amount of time tbefore it goes to sleep go to the apple menu top left hand corner of the screen then down to system preferences and then the control panel energy saver and select the length of time before the display is put to sleep. Unchecking the box that says "put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" will also help but the macbook's battery will run down faster. Hope this helps

Waking from sleep mod

The hinge is a very fragile part of the Macbook. In the hinge goes all the video and sound cables, as well as the backlight power. You can have a hardware problem here with your connectors.
However the sleep mode can also take its time to wake up:
- The hard dive needs to wake its 5400 rpms - The system has to wake - The video has to wake
I would think that a fast internal hard drive, as a SSD drive for example, will wake up much faster.
Hope this helps

Machine shuts down, might start again in a day or so

This may solve your issue:

The PMU is a microcontroller chip that controls power functions for the computer. The PMU is a computer within a computer, as it has its own memory, software, firmware, input/output, a CPU, and more. Its function is to:
  • Tell the computer to turn on, turn off, sleep, wake, idle, etc.
  • Manage system resets from various commands.
  • Maintain parameter RAM (PRAM).
  • Manage the real-time clock.
Over time, the settings in the Power Manager may become unusable, which can result in operational anomalies with the computer. Examples include not turning on, not waking from sleep, or not seeing devices plugged into the USB and FireWire ports, among others.
Resetting the PMU is not intended for resolution of a stall or situation in which the computer is unresponsive. A PMU reset should not be necessary except as a last resort in cases where a hardware failure of the power management system is suspected. Performing a PMU reset returns the computer hardware, including NVRAM, to default settings and forces the computer to shut down.

Setting a Password

Under the extreme left of the tool bar, find the blue apple.
Under that, choose "System Preferences"
Choose "Security"
Click in the circle that says "require password to wake..."

When you installed OSX, you will have created a Username and Password. That will be the password you will use to get past the screensaver, if set, or a blank screen if not.

Cant turn on

If you have the problem with no chime, no screen light up, and fans at max, it may be possible to fix it. It is often a design flaw in the soldering process.
Press firmly down on the left of the mouse pad when you press the power button (or try holding it in your left hand with your thumb by the touch mouse and fingers under the mac pressing firmly on the bottom) if it chimes. or even boots when this is done you can find a shop that does soldering(micro soldering) and have them fix the chip thats lose. Or for a quick fix try this site he shows the most common chip that comes lose.
All but 3 or 4 failed iBook's that had the fans start and nothing else, seem to have this problem(that I've seen) but Mac refuses to say it's a defect in all country's but Denmark (because a official study was done there that proved it was a manufacturers defect that each time you power on/off the iBook the solder gets a little looser.)
