Looks like no one is going to jump on this one... The one reason I'd make the change is to block someone who has access to my network.

I don't advise the inexperienced administrator tackle this task either. However, you asked. The way you worded the question leads me to suspect you need some background too. I'll give you my best answer. Hang on!

A "Router" (wired or wireless) is the device that resides (electronically) between your Internet connected devices/computers/printers and the Internet. It was most likely installed by your Internet Service Provider. Computers (printers and other devices) connected to a router wirelessly (WiFi) need to know the name (SSID) and password (WEP WPA-PSK key) of the local wireless network (router). The name and key (password) is set at/on your router when it is first installed and can be changed by logging into the router as an administrator. Be advised once you change it on the router your computer(s) will be disconnected from the router and will be required to supply the new key to reconnect.

You didn't specify who your Internet Service Provider is or the manufacturer and model of your router so I can't be of specific help on exactly how to log into your router to make the change. You didn't specify your system's OS (Apple, PC Windows X, Lenux, etc). If you do not have the owner manual for your router get it before going any further. Get:
·Manufacturer and model info.
·Download the manual from web.
·Find, on your computer where you access the WiFi. On a PC:
A- "Right" click and "Open Network and Sharing Center" the "network Internet access" icon in the System Tray (Extreme lower right of Start Bar [where clock is at]) Usually the icon looks like a monitor. Once the "Network Sharing Center" is up:
B- Left click "See Full Map"
C- Once the map is displayed poise the mouse over the router's icon and it should give you it's address. It is usually 192.168.x.x (x= variable numbers). Make a note of the address. Accessing the router with a browser (such as I.E., Firefox, or Chrome) will require you know the router's administrator account and password. Enter the address where the "www.x.com address stuff is usually at.
D- Once you're in the router you can change the key. Make sure you enter it accurately. Once you've saved the changes you will be kicked out of the router.
E- Reconnect your computer with the new key by left click on the icon mentioned in "A" above.

NOTE: It is easy to lock yourself out of your own system. If you're not comfortable doing this call in a professional.

Good Luck

How can change user name and password in router D-Link?

Reading this question, I'm thinking that you want to change the SSID, this is the name that shows up when searching for wireless connection. First, you must find out what is your gateway, this is the main IP address. It usually is 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1. Once you have that information, you need to log in the router, to log in, open a browser and type the gateway (Ex. http://192.168.0.1) A new window will pop up asking for a log in information. The most common default log in info are:
Username Password

admin admin
root 1234
admin password

Once you had successfully log in, take a look at what you have in front of you. There must be a tab name Wireless, click it. Look for SSID and change it to what you want to name it. Security should be in the same path, if not, save your work and log in again, but since you already change the SSID, you must search for the wireless connection again, and input the password, log in again.
If security is within wireless, then just head over to password and change it. You can also change the encryption type, I recommend WPA 2 personal. Once everything is all set up with the new SSID and the new password, click Save.
Search for the new SSID or router with your computer and input your new password once found by the computer./ Good luck.

Where is the SSID?

You can adjust the SSID(name of your network) by connecting your computer to the router. In a web browser, go to http://192.168.1.1

If you are using the default settings, the password is "password". You will see a section where you can see your SSID or change it if need be.

Password for computers to access wireless

When you configured your wireless router to create your wireless network, you set:
* SSID (the "name" of your network)
* encryption-level (use 'WPA' or higher-level)
* password for your SSID

So, connect an Ethernet cable between your computer and your router, and "login" to your router, to view/change the password.

Will not let my laptop find it

No Wireless Connection Found in Range

Note: You need to use a computer hardwired to the router to check the wireless settings.

1. Please open any web browser like Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator.
2. Connect to the router by typing http://routerlogin.com/basicsetting.htm or http://192.168.1.1 in the address field and click Enter or Return key.
3. A window will prompt for a user name and password. The default username is "admin" and the default password is "password".

Note: If it does not take password as the password, you might have changed it when you have run the NETGEAR Setup CD so please try other passwords. If you cannot remember the password, you need to reset the router and run the Setup CD to reconfigure it.

4. Click the Wireless Settings under Advanced tab.
5. Check the box under Enable Wireless Router Radio and Enable Wireless SSID Broadcast.
6. Click the Wireless Settings under Setup.
7. Change Channel (recommended are 1, 6 and 11).
8. Change the SSID to uniquely identify your network. You might have a similar SSID with your neighbor.

Note: Do not change the SSID if there are already other wireless computers that can connect to the network.

Other factors that you may consider when you are not able to view any available wireless network:

a. Switch for the wireless adapter is turned off
b. Distance between the wireless router and computer
c. Possible wireless interferences
