Could also be varnished (worn). It will be shinny versus a flat black rubber color. If that's the case, best to replace it if you can.

Engine squeal with belts off

Hello-
I assume you mean the belts are squealing when you replaced the belts. You should not run your car without the belts - damage may result.
Squealing belts usually mean they are not on tight enough (loose). Refer to your car's belt replacement instructions to determine how to increase their tension. Belts can be damaged and accessories (such as power steering, water pump, etc) not function correctly if the belts are not tensioned properly.

2003 Kia Rio new fan belts squeal when lights, heat, or radio are turned on, especially when car is cold. caused a fuse to blow last winter

Hey Anon, Are you SURE you got the correct belt?? Something does not sound right about this...???... Double check all the pulleys when the belts are off...the alternator should spin freely, all the the idler pulleys should spin free..(ones that just spin and guide but are NOT connected to anything)!! This very thing happened to me...it was a $12 idler pulley that did nothing but spun and guided the belt..

My car makes a squealing noise and thermostat varies.

replace the failing drive belt and make sure it is tensioned correctly
the noise is from a slipping belt and the battery problem is because the alternator is not charging because of the drive belt problem

2003 subaru forester makes noise when airconditioner comes on. Is it the fan belt

What kind of sound? If it squeals then the fan belt needs tightening or replacing.
If the sound is the engine increasing in speed when the compressor engages then that's normal.

I have a 2001 Subaru Forester. When I turn the A/C on, the cars squeal loudly at idle and at slower speeds. At higher speeds 40 MPH, the squeal stops. The A/C works fine. Additionally, when the temp...

You have a loose belt on the A/C. On most new cars that is one big belt that drives everything on the car. If when you look at the belt on the grooved side, do you see cracks on the grooved part running across (from side to side) on the belt? if so, it is in bad need of a new belt. A new belt should stop the squealing noise. While you are replacing the belt also check the belt tensioner to ensure it is in good working order.
