Hey i had this same problem with mine
its to do with the graphics chip and av port but i got it fixed.
the easyest way is to call microsoft but that takes time. the other way i fixed it was to wrap it in two towels. it worked for me.

ok first thing to do is take everything out ur xbox e.g hardrive controllers etc only leave the av cable and power cable.

2nd lie a towel on the floor and sit the xbox on its side on the towel turn the xbox on till the error message plays on ur tv and then wrap the towel around the xbox blocking all the vents, put another towel over it to make sure the vents are covered. leave on for 15 mins in the towels then after 15 mins remove the towels and turn off xbox leave for 5 mins then turn on and it should work it worked for mine. its only a temp fix but at least you can play it while your waiting on microsoft

hope this helps please rate me

System error E 74 is coming up on my xbox360

This problem occurs when the Xbox 360 console experiences a hardware failure. To verify that your console is displaying the E74 error message, follow these steps:
  1. Turn off the console.
  2. Turn on the console.
  3. Verify that your console displays the E74 error message.
If you are experiencing this problem, your Xbox 360 console must be repaired at our service center. to start the repair process.

Microsoft covers repairs for the E74 error for a period of three (3) years from the original purchase date of the console. If you are outside the initial three-year warranty period, you can still receive console repair service from Microsoft for a fee for the E74 error.

Single red flashing light and system error E74 showing on the TV

The E74 error is caused by the scaler chip at the back of the console taking too much heat. To fix it you need to stop the heat build up.

You can do this yourself using a good guide that will show you how to fix it with household items or you can send it in and they will fix it for you.

My x box says system error E74

E74 should be covered by Microsoft warranty. It is related to heat and the GPU.

Call, repeat, call their support number and tell them the code. That will save you time and frustration. Have had many friends return theirs and using the online version has not been very effective.

They will ship you a box to send it in and you will be without the xbox for about 10 days total.

Red light blinking system error E74

this might be a hardware failure. try turning it off then back, or try keeping a fan on it when you play on and if that doesn't work call 1800myxbox there you'll find step by step instructions to send it down to texas and get it fixed. if that happens three times you will recieve a brand new xbox 360 that has that problem fixed. also keep in mind to keep your hard drive before you send it to be fixed. i really hope this helps with your problem
-good luck

X box wont start

E74 is a video error. First thing to do is check your video cables and ensure they are all seated properly. IF that does not fix the problem try changing your cables out or switching to a different type, ie: switch to HDMI or from HDMI to the AV Cable. However, I just experienced this very same problem a few weeks back and was unable to get anything to work and in the end was relegated to sending the Xbox back to Microsoft for repairs. If you are still under the original 1 year warranty it will obviously be a free repair or if you have an extended warranty from the store you bought it at they should be able to handle it for you. If not it will be $99 for Microsoft if you set the repair through their website or $119 if you call the toll free number and have a person help set up the repair.

Here is a recent article on the E74 error that shows the vast majority of the people who have had the problem got it AFTER the NXE update.

Good Luck
