I've just been given a singer 447 sewing machine. I have threaded top and bobbin but the top thread is not looping/ catching the bobbin thread. It doesn't bring the bobbin thread up, at all?

I believe you have a broken gear. These are difficult to repair on your own.

You may have the bobbin case in wrong.  I have this machine, and I know that it is really easy to put the bobbin case in wrong.  Try taking it out and making sure that the little stop is in the front and it is seated down in there and able to wiggle back and forth.  My experience with this machine, until the other day when my cat knocked mine off the table and knocked something out of alignment, is that it just works.  Any time mine hasn't worked, it has either been dirty, needing oil, threaded wrong or the bobbin case wasn't seated right.  In other words, it has always been my fault.

SOURCE: Singer Sewing Machine model 9224. Bobbin thread

If you turn the handwheel, can you see a metal ring rotating around the outer edge of the bobbin case? If not rotating, broken gear or timing belt off.
If that ring is turning, remove the needle plate and bobbin case. As this ring now rotates, you will a finger on the ring that will pass behind the needle from right to left and it should catch the thread from the eye of the needle. If this finger, the "hook" passes above the eye, you have a timing problem.

Let me know.

Model 466. Why doesn't it pick up bobbin thread?

This means the rotary hook is not catching the top thread and looping it around the bobbin.

Be sure the needle is not bent and top thread is properly threaded. Be sure needle is properly oriented and seated in the needle bar.

Be sure you have bobbin properly wound, inserted, and threaded per machine instructions.

Download your owners manual from the Singer website at...

Try cleaning hook and race area if still having trouble.

If it was working fine and it recently broke a needle and/or jammed, the timing may have slipped.

I am not sure about this particular machine but in most machines there will be a nob on the front loose low numbers like 0 1 -2 work well on number 3. If the nob is not on the front check and see if it is on the side.

Why does the top thread sometimes picks up the hook and then picks up bobbin but bobbin then crosses over and makes a mess? Wont work

Basic Tips for All
  1. Always turn the handwheel TOWARDS you (counter clockwise) as turning it in the opposite direction (away from you, clockwise) may knock the timing out requiring repair from a service center.
  2. Always be sure your presser foot is in the DOWN position before sewing. Sewing with the presser foot in the up position will cause your thread to tangle and your bobbin to jam.
  3. Change needles regularly (after 16 hours of use) as dull/weak needles can cause damage to your machine and fabric. Only use SINGER needles on your SINGER sewing machine.
  4. Always be sure you are using the correct bobbin for your machine. Class 66, Class 15 and Class 15J bobbins look very similar. However, using the incorrect bobbin class in your machine can cause damage.

I have had a singer prelude 8280 for a year now with no problems. now all the sudden the thread is catching in the bobbin casing. The thread on top looks normal, but when you turn over the fabric...

change the needle
clean under the needle plate where the feed dogs are for lint
make sure the thread has not come off the thread take up lever
rethread the machine

Bobbin thread does not loop up when threading machine. Then the needle thread get wraped around the inside the bobbin sewing the material to the machine

There are so many thing you need to re-check.

First clean out the bobbin area to be sure there aren't any thread tangles still there.

Open the manual and start from the beginning with threading the machine with the presser foot lever UP - always.

Read the instructions and do not rely solely on the pictures as we all sometimes rush to do (I am just as guilty as the next person to do this).

Make sure the bobbin thread is feeding from the bobbin case in the correct direction.

Hold onto the end of the top thread (after needle has been threaded) and lower then raise the needle to catch and bring up the bobbin thread.

Place the fabric under the presser foot and as you hold onto the ends of the top and bobbin thread, hand walk the first stitch, then use the power pedal.

If you need a manual, you can download (free) from Singer - http://www.singerco.com/accessories/manuals.html

I can't raise the bobbin thread. The needle raises before the bobbin thread can 'catch'

readjust the hook to just grab the thread loop as the needle raises it will take a few tries to get the exact setting for the hook (maybe you will see a mark on the hook shaft to show you where the hook's set screw was located before it slipped)
