Unable to access new hard drive

i have just installed a new Western Digital WD5000AAKS 500GB SATA II 7200RPM 16MB Cache into my pc. It all appears to have been installed correctly as it is shown in the sytem BIOS and in device manager. The only problem is that no icon is appearing in "my computer" therefore i am unable to access or use this new drive.

Re: unable to access new hard drive

Try looking for the drive in the "Disk Management". Right click on "My Computer" or "Computer" and select "Manage" then select the "Disk Management" item.

If you can see the drive, but there is no drive letter assigned, you may need to format it for your operating system or create an accessible partition on the drive. You can access all these options by right clicking on the drive from the "disk management" screen that you should be on.

Good Luck!

Re: unable to access new hard drive

This is probably due to the USB power source. If you are on a laptop, try the "Y" splitter cable that came with the drive. Plug the cable into two USB ports and then plug the drive into the other end.

Wd5000AAkX no jumper diagram need to put it as a slave

There are normally no jumper settings on a SATA HDD as you can only connect one drive per SATA port, hence every drive is a Master on its own port.
You can set Boot Priority within the BIOS settings if you have more than one drive attached.

Hi guys, i have a new WDbluecavier 500Gb,16Mb cache but the allocate space is how can locate the remaining space??

This is the real capacity of your 500 GB hard disk - they are measuring it incorrectly for commercial reasons (in reality it's just 488GB) and there is a part that is reserved internally. There is nothing else.

I'm trying to install MAC OS 10.6.6, but it keeps on failing. It says it can't install. The new internal harddrive is a Samsung Hm500jj 500gb,harddrive. Please help?

Be sure to use the OS installation disks that came with your system initially.
  1. You want to insert the CD or DVD that came with your computer
  2. When you get to the first screen, look for the Utility dropdown menu at the top
  3. Select erase and target the new Hard Drive
  4. Select HFS+ as the file system and check the box for OS 9 drivers if you need them
  5. Wait for a few seconds while the new drive is formatted
  6. Then select this disk for installation in the wizard and install the Operating System

WD Caviar SE16 WD3200AAKS 320GB 7200 not recognized at install

Windows XP does not have built in SATA drivers. You will need to download the XP drivers from Western Digital's website and install before the computer will allow you to format and use your new drive. Hope this helps.
