Progressive scan mode is used by DVD players to artificially scale standard resolution DVDs to HD resolution, usually 720i. Is your set capable of receiving HD resolution? If not, that is probably why you are getting the blue screen.
Did you try a Google search for the product name and model number? ( Example: Zenith Allegro DVD VDR progressive scan model number xxxxxxx manual.) You should be able to find the manual on-line if you have the model number (not the serial number).
Try the (Goldstar and Zenith) trick - with the unit on, but no discs inserted, press and hold STOP button on the front (not the remote) for 10 seconds, then release. This should revert progressive back to normal interlace output for your TV and may also turn off the progressive LED indicator on your unit.
I mentioned 2 other brands in parentheses - because the (press and hold STOP for 10 seconds) trick works for progressive on those.
It's unlikely that you've broken it - you appear to be using the wrong method for switching it off.
Correct instructions for turning Progressive (P) Scan off:
1. Remove any disc from the unit and close the disc tray. 2. Wait for the "NO DISC" message to appear on the display 3. Press and hold the "STOP" button on the front of the unit for at least 5 seconds then release.
The video output should return to the normal setting and "P/SCAN" should disappear from the display on the front of the player.
If you are still unable to switch P/SCAN off, please post back for further assistance.

Remove the DVD from the drive, close the door & wait until it says no disk. Press & hold the stop button for 10 seconds. Your screen should pop back up - voila!
Hold the stop button for about 10 seconds. The other thing to do is move the video out cable at the back of the DVD to one of the component outs (there are three of them one for each color rgb) you will be able to read the menu again. turn off progressive scan and reconnect the video cable to dvd out
Hi, you must hold 1st remove the disc (if you have one in) then hold down the STOP which is just under the RECORD button. Hold it for about 6 to 8 seconds. That should clear it.
