when I plug my wd 250 hd into my laptop (Win XP), my hd sounds funny (it makes like 3 "clank" noises, like when trying to read the drive). Win XP will recognize that a usb connection has been made but when I go to My PC to find my hd drive it´s not there. I was working fine yesterday.
Those 'clank' noises are definitely not a good sign--the drive is failing and is trying to spin up but is unable to.
The only suggestion I have is to get pricing on sending it off to a company who can repair the hard drive and (hopefully) recover any data you have on it.
Sorry for the bad news...

plugged in a 15volt power cord into a 250 GB Western Digital External HD - My book. Now, light lights, but disk does not spin. I figured the power supply board got smoked. I have another WD book that I want to swap the drive into. I can't figure out how to open the case.
