Emptying out the power steering reservoir I accidentally spilled power steering fluid for the engine block at the top where the spark plugs are and it ran down the side of the timing belt and dropped onto where the exhaust manifold is

Flat blade screw driver, and wrap a rag around the tip, stick it down into the sparkplug hole and suck up the fluid. Don't take out the sparkplugs while doing this, just go down the sides. Just wipe up what you can, the rest will burn off. You'll probably see some smoking in there for a bit, but no big deal.

Hello Josh,

Fluid spill.

These types of things happen some times and usually is not a big deal. If the fluid gets on an electrical component this can be bad but these connections are often protected. If you get the wrong type of fluid on a belt then slippage may occur. Also, as fluid gets hot (exhaust manifold) the fluid will smoke and burn off.

Solution: Clean the spill as best you can and use a funnel next time.

I hope this helps.

Checking and replacing power steering fluid

1. Open the hood of the vehicle.

2. Look for the power steering fluid reservoir.

3. Raise the reservoir and disconnect the hose that goes to the oil cooler.

4. Connect a hose of suitable diameter to the disconnected hose that goes to the oil cooler and put the hose end in the fluid jar.( be careful not to spill the fluid on the painted area of the body. Wipe off spilled fluid at once.)

5. Start engine and let it run at idle. Turn the steering wheel from lock to lock position several times. When fluid stop running out from the hose, shut off the engine. Discard fluid that was drained from the reservoir.

6. Re-fit the return hose to the reservoir.

7. Fill the reservoir to the level mark.

Note: Use only fluid that is recommended by the manufacturer.

8, Start engine and run it at fast idle. Turn the steering wheel from lock to lock position several times in order to bleed air that is present inside the system.

9. Recheck the fluid level. Add some if necessary.

Note: Do not fill the reservoir beyond the upper limit

When I turn my steering wheal it makes a hollow sound

Check the power steering for low fluid in the power steering fluid reservoir on the front of the engine. Refer to your owners manual for illustration and location. If the level is low you have a leak, look for a red fluid on the ground under the car when parked.

I have a 2004 PT Cruiser. Windshield washer reservoir is full but will not spray onto windshield.

the pump which is located on the outlet of the reservoir is either defective, corroded/loose electrical wiring on it or a blown fuse. Check the fuse first seeing it the easiest. Hope this helps
