Hi,
My computer confidant is advising that since this graphics card is integrated into the motherboard, the entire motherboard needs to be
replaced. What? Can this be? The problem does appear widespread,
but with no recourse through Dell or Nvidia.
Any ideas? Thanks,

Both solutions are wrong. The Dell Inspiron 9400/1705 is a laptop. If you buy a Nvidia GeForce Go 7800 for this laptop, you need to buy a Dell Inspiron 9400/E1705 motherboard for a discrete video card. The integrated video is a Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950. The integrated video has the video chipset on the motherboard and the discrete video (GeForce Go 7800) has the video chipset on the video card.

you can disable the on board graphic card integrated into the motherboard , buy a new graphic card and install it to your computer.
The new card will be your primary graphic card.

i think no need because your motherboard also have separate slots for your VGA Card, AGP or PCI-E design... think about it if whole MB is changed so your buying a new one.. all you have to do is made some test using VGA Card from slots AGP or PCI-E, if it is made the BIOS appear on the screen, then its ok... don't bothe, there is such an option to your problem.
