Lens stuck out; camera won't stay on

The lens on my sony dsc-s500 is stuck out and when I push the power button it lights up and cyber-shot shows on the screen then it turns off immediately.  I haven't dropped it or anything.

When turned on the lens comes out of the camera BUT the shutter closes and when the camera if off the shutter opens? Any ideas

    When power button is pushed, the cyber-shot image comes on screen and red light flashes, then it powers off. Tried new batteries, no change.

    On my Casio EX-Z700 Didital Camera, My len was stuck out and there was no image on the screen. Camera would not take a picture. I finally was able to shut the camera down by holding down the power switch.

    Ok, but what finally got the camera to work again was that I took out the card and clean the contacts.

    I was trying to connect my Ricoh R6 to the TV, switched the camera on then realising I didnt have the cable. I went away for about 5 minutes leaving the camera switched on, when I came back the camera had gone off but the lens was still out. Thinking that the battery had gone I recharged it. After several hours of charging the light on the charger went out so I guessed it was fully charged. I inserted the battery and tried to turn on the camera. Now it flashes on the LCD, makes a beeping kind of noise and goes off with lens still sticking out. I called Jessops and they sent to bring it back and they would send it away. I am trying to see whether there is any way to reset it before I do this.

    This is the most infuriating thing. I bought this camera specifically because I am going abroad. I leave in 30 minutes in fact. What a terrible time for this problem to happen.

    I believe that the cheap, poorly crafted tools used in the camera are the reason behind this problem.

    What I am doing is holding down the on/off button without releasing. That way it DOES stay on long enough for me to take a photo. What a pain.

    After about 2n hours, on/off button worked. Camera seems fine except " AF" still comes up occasionally.

I have the same problem. Its actually because the On/Off button got pushed in somehow and its stuck. At this time right now, im not sure how to make it unstuck, but sometimes it will stay on. But when you push on, since its being held down, its stuck that way and immediately turns off because its still being held down constantly. Maybe try using a thing needle to try and push it out?

It is problem of lens mechanism and only solution is to replace lens assembly. Local camera repair shop will help you to replace lens assembly because it is not user level repair.

Lens stuck open

I have to agree with one of the comments previously posted. I too had a Sony DCS-S700 and the lens was stuck open. Whenever I turned the camera on, the Sony Cybershot logo appeared and dissappeared, turning the camera off. I noticed the lens was crooked, so I moved it in the center direction and the camera worked again.

Sony DSC-S500

you are right it has defective mechanism,  a stucked mechanism is present. camcorder are smart it can detects error and shuts down itself for safety. earlier models dominoes the defect if the user is not quick enough to react when something goes wrong with the camera. You need professional service to fix it.

Lean do not come out

assume lens has been . . . dropped ( typical ) but cost of new lens nearly same as new camera ; as last ditch effort ' coax ' your lens out with very gentle ! rocking action - may work one more time , or will start working again ( good luck ) ;
