If it's a factory unit, call Ford dealership and tell them your vin and they should be able to tell you what magazine it takes. To remove, there's 2 screws at the bottom of the center console, inside next to cd player, under rubber mat.remove them and complete plastic trim, console bucket, will lift out.might have to wiggle it a little but will lift, then there's 4 screws holding bracket for cd player. Unplug and remove. You maybe able to see part number without removing player
My 1999 Beetle did the same thing. I didn't have any luck repairing it, even tried a different magazine but nothing helped. Fortunately I found someone local selling a used trunk-mounted CD changer for $10, so I bought that and it worked like a champ.
So for me, I ended up having to replace the CD changer to fix this problem. Hope you have better luck.

most cd changer magazines are the same, the best way to find a replacement is the goto an audio/video retailer and speak with an agent about trying some in your cd changer.
i had to do the same thing for my 07 mercedes c230 due to the fact i wasnt paying $150 for a piece of plastic
call a BMW dealer and talk to either your salesman or parts. ask them if they can run your VIN to see if it is prewired for a CD changer (assuming you don't see the wiring in the rear compartment). all they will need is the last 7 digits of the VIN.
BMW does sell an IPOD controller, but i think DICE makes a better one. check them out here:
