We had lightening strike our driveway a couple nights ago. It apparently traveled through our cable tv/internet cable. My modem is completely fried, it's not getting any power at all. When we power up our Dell computer the operating system comes on but thats as far as we can get. It seems that none of our usb connections seem to be working. So we can't use the mouse or the keyboard. Is it possible that a surge going thru the cable fried our modem and our usb hub? Can this be replaced or do we have to replace our entire motherboard? Will this be costly? Our hard drive was bought in early 2007 and we weren't expecting to replace it for a couple more years but would we be better off just replacing our hard drive?? Any suggestions or solutions?? We aren't very computer literate and our regular computer repairman has recently gone out of buisness. Someone I found in the phonebook wants $95 just to diagnose our problem and I'm afraid we may get taken. Any advice or help will be appreciated! Jeannie

very like the surge did indeed fry your hubs and modem, was the computer on when this happened? if it boots to operating system but goes no farther hard drive may have been glitched if on. do you have use of any mouse or keyboard? if mother board is damaged likely other things are and best not to reinvest into more problems but replace if it boot to windows there might be hope

if the problem is not turned worse then the motherboard can be repaired easily.also the modem if faulty can be repaired or replaced as it wont cost much.but yes it is necessary for a technician to manually diagnose this to see the current state of mother board.
