Re: slow downloads

Always update the router firmware ONLY if you have problems.

Run a DSL test to see if your actually getting the full speed inside the network. <<--i believe but you can do a google search for broadband test.

I know with comcast you can unplug the modem for lengthy time, plug it back in so it pulls the most updated version off of comcast's server.

Running slow

Is it running slow on both wired and wireless connections? how about if a PC is wired directly to the modem? That will eliminate the router as the issue (slow internet could be your modem or the connection itself).

If you're sure it's the router (wireless and wired) then upgrading the firmware would be first step. You can download the latest firmware from and get it installed via the web interface of the router (probably found by going to

If a firmware update doesn't do it you can change your DNS servers from being automatically detected from your ISP to public ones. This may help web pages load faster. You can enter them also using the web interface. Set the Primary and Secondary DNS address to the numbers below (they are from

Scroll Issue

This is a very interesting problem.. Normally I would say the a router could not cause this kind of problem, but if the page is still loading, it could be possible.

When this happens, has the page finished loading all ready? The little circle of dots spinning in the top right of the browser if you are running firefox, will tell you if the page is still loading. There will be a similar icon for Internet Explorer too.

If the page has already loaded completely, then there is no way a router could cause the slow down. If you used the install CD that came with the router (no necessary by the way) then it could have loaded some "free" software on PC and this software is now slowing the browser down.

Cannot get wireless working. please help.

Hello ,

One known solution to many of the Actiontec WI424WR Problems is to upgrade the firmware using the Routers Web Interface to download and install , there is also a glitch you may encounter while upgrading , the screen may appear to freeze during the process but to udate the screen you just have to refresh the page,

Hope this helps

Fast Page Loads Slow Downloads

it really depends on how far you are from your Router. The farther you go, the weaker the signal gets resulting in slower speeds. Slower speeds will not affect web page load times (they are tiny parts of data) but will definately affect download speeds. You need to be as close to the router as possible or get perfect range. You can put the router at higher elevation in the room to get a better range to start with. Let me know if this works for you.

Yes upgrading the firmware will fix the problem but before...that..scan your system for can try free anti-spyware tools like spybot search and destroy or Ad-aware..Often spyware and malware affect your network utilization drastically...also let me know the configuration settings of your router...mis-configuration may also cause the problem..

Firewall issue?

Yes this is possible you can turn off the fire wall or you can open up the port your down loading program uses to communicate with its peers. in the menu I believe you will find a tab for port forwarding. They may even list the program you are using. in any event here is a link on port forwarding that may help: Subsittute your ports for the one on the web page and you should be connected in no time.
