When trying to back up stiching it refuses. there is very little mechanical parts to see relative to the reverse button
The button is a relay switch and is an electronic component
Quite easy to replace, but you need to get parts from Janome Authorised Dealer
The reverser on my Janome 5124 from early 2000's is not an electronic switch. It is a mechanical lever that allows the feed dog cam to slide on a rod to reverse direction. In my case, I found that the grease on the rod had become thick with age and did not allow the reverse cam to slide freely. Therefore, it was stuck in forward with no reverse. By the same note, I believe it could "hang up" the other way as well. In other words, get stuck on the reverse side of the rod. Solution: this rod and cam is below the sewing bed, slightly to the right. You could try warming the hard grease with a hair dryer and vigorously actuating the reverse button to melt the grease and restore play in the cam. Though that's not what I did so I don't know if it would work. The bottom cover of the sewing bed comes off with a couple screws, exposing the mechanics inside. You may need to buy a service manual (google it) for around $10 so you can see how to remove multiple shrouds to be able to reach those screws. Once inside, spray some white lithium grease on the rod and reverser to dissolve the old grease and restore play. Put the shrouds back on and sew away. Caution: the screws needed to remove the shrouds are not intuitive. You really should buy the service manual...google it.
