Can u turn the brush by hand with the vac off. Sounds like a bushing on the brush is siezed or mabe the belt is worn out and too loose. Try replacing the belt
After reading postings I created my own solution. I took a 1.5cm (approximate length) flush head finishing screw and screwed it into the button contact of the white memebrane and adjusted it to the necessary heigth to make the rod depress at the corrrect depth. My initial placement was too high and I had a continuos flow of water, but was able to fine tune. Also note the head of the screw I used was a similar circumference of the nob of the white membrane.
You need to change the belt. The belt will not turn the brush roll and is slipping on the drive shaft. This is creating the burning smell you describe.
You say you just brought it home. From where? From repair or is this a new machine.
