Kenmore Washing Machine 70 series

The machine make a loud clanging grinding noise, and it will not spin or agitate. What could it be. It is 10 years old and this is the first problem I have had with it.

Kenmore washing machine will not spin. I assume it is over 10 years old - came with home I purchased three years ago. Do I need to purchase new one or can a repair person repair it and is it worth it to repair????

  • Anonymous Dec 24, 2007

When turning the inner spin cylinder clockwise, there is a loud sound in the same spot, each time the basket turns. Also, you can see the inner basked slightly drop at the same spot during the sound.

I went through the bolts and they seemed pretty tight, it seems as if the problem is inside one of the casings. What is the issue?

My washing machine has a broken coupler or transmission, I think. The electric motor is working because the pump work. There is a noise but the agitator doesn't work. Is there a way to fix this without calling a professional?

You most likely have a broken coupler between the motor and gearcase.
You can buy the part for about $10 or have someone come out and replace it for about $150-200.
If you will post the complete model number from the the washer so I can see which style cabinet you have, I will try to walk you through the repair. It isn't very complicated if you are handy with home repairs.
With the age of the machine it probably just needs a coupler, but it could also have a problem in the transmission or basket drive that has caused the failure.

Here are the steps for the most common of the 70 series washers.

Remove the two screws that hold the console to the cabinet and flip the console back.
Remove the two clips that hold the cabinet to the rear panel of the washer and unplug the lid switch harness. The cabinet will tilt forward and slide off.
Remove the clips holding the water pump and move it to the side.
Unplug the wires from the motor and remove the clips holding it.
You will see the motor coupler.
Make sure you can turn the gearcase shaft with a pair of pliers so it is not locked up.

The screws that hold the console are under the trim pieces at the front edges of the console. They pop off.

I have a Kenmore washer model 110.20702990
I will go thru wash cycles but then stops and will not restart. I can move the timer but it still will not start other than agitate. Is there a simple fix for it?

I have a Kenmore 70 Series washing machine. Wife says it smelt like something was burning yesterday when she had it running and she shut it off. Towels were still wet when I arrived on the scene, so I assume it didn't spin prior to her shutting it off.

If your Kenmore 70 series is making a grinding noise, filling and draining but not spinning or agitating, its usually as simple as a belt. If you pull it out, remove the back panel and see the belt just sitting there, that will be your confirmation. Sears, Home Depot, Osh, or Lowe's should have the part...

There are no belts, it is a direct drive. The coupling between the motor and gearcase seems to be in good condition. Can the gear box be repaired or does it need to be replaced?

Washing machine makes a clanging sound during agitation/spin

Without being there to physically see what it's doing or hear the sound, I would say there's 3 possibilities. 1) drive block is slipping on basket drive / brake assembly. 2) basket drive assembly is worn where drive block seats onto it. 3) clutch slipping.

Does the washing machine empty as normal? I am assuming it does and think the brushes on the motor could be worn. Hope this helps.

Kenmore Washing Machine 70 series

When this machine is not spinning, the water should still be able to drain, as the motor drives the pump on the same shaft as the coupler for the tranny. Set to the spin setting and depress the lid switch, if the water still does not drain, you may have something stuck in your pump, which would also lock the motor shaft and not allow it to spin or agitate. If the water does drain, check the motor coupler, which is located between the motor and transmission, if broken, the motor will run but there is no drive to the transmission. Hope this helps...

I have a kenmore 70 series washer, the machine won't spin. I hear the clutch but it's not engaging. The pump to remove the water seems to be operating but the tub just won't spin and makes a loud noise.

The loud noise (sounds like rattling or grinding) is the motor coupler. It's between the motor and the transmission. This part takes the place of the belt, and costs about $20.00.

Good luck!
