Question about Western Digital My Book Essential Edition (WDG1U5000N) 500 GB Hard Drive
I read the problems several individuals are having with My Book 500GB Essentials. I was using this external HD for a while with no problems all of the sudden it does not show up in as a drive (E:). I read that Cyrylthewolf has a solution and so does Incubus_DZ. However I cannot find out what steps they took to solve it. Please could you help me.
If your harddrive is showing up in your device manager but not in my computer then its a drive path issue. Try this: right click on my computer then manage, next click disk drives, the drive in question should be on the list as a blank space. All you have to do is right click on the drive and choose assign drive letter. Hopefully this helps.

This is what I did. The Safely Remove Hardware recognized m
y hard drive, but all of the sudden it had no drive letter. Try this... its working for me so far, not through formatting but I think that its gonna work, I already assigned a drive letter. Seems to be working...
1. go to START>admin tools>computer management>storage>disk management>
2. my hard drive was listed after I plugged my usb back in
3. It showed it as WD MYBOOK 500, but it said it was not initialized
4.right click the hard drive in question
5. select change drive letter/paths
6. if its not showing yet on my computer select extend volume
7. it will reformat, but it will get it working..... I'm not sure if I have lost all of my storage yet or not , will update...
hope this works lads!

Okay, I was having the same problem as the rest of you, and decided to try what sounded to me like a very unlikely fix. That unlikely fix cured it. I unplugged the cord from my power strip and plugged it directly into the wall, and it worked. All is well with things now. Blew me away, but I'm now a happy camper.

Sound like the drive has bad heads...
Here's a good article about problems with these drives with all the sounds: http://datacent.com/datarecovery/hdd/western_digital

I use firewire connection. When it is not recognised I unplug it from the computer so that it shuts down then remove the power cable from the back and reattach it. Does the trick nearly every time.
havent plugged it into the mains directly cause i dont have a socket near my desk

I had the same problem. When the drive warms up it shuts down. Unplug the drive and let it cool down or throw it in the frezzer for an hour or so. That will give you enough time to recover your information but as soon as it warms up again, it will disappear or look as though its blank. Then throw it in the garbage.

I rebooted my pc and my passport stopped working. IF I click the drive it said that it was unformmated, tried scavenger to get my data back and it didn't get the 4 gb files. tried several other programs and non got the big files. until I found Ontrack EasyRecovery Professional and chose data recovery and run an advanced recovery. I highlighted problem drive where the small ball representing the hard drive is, and to the right is an advance option button click. under file system scan tab select ntfs on the down arrow in file system click ok. If the next button is not click able highlight DW [465.75 GB] then next. every single file big and small will be recovered. after that, use EASEUS Partition Master 6.0.1 Professional Edition format disk, as a right now I'm moving back all data recovered to the disk. Give it a try

Concur. I just brought a WD 500gig. It shows up fine in the BIOS and in Devise Manager but there was no sign of it in Explorer. As mentioned above I went into My_Computer-->Manage-->Disk_Management and the drive was there but with a warning symbol. Simply it wasn't formatted! I make a primary partition and am currently formatting, taking ages but it now has a valid drive letter.

On May 19, 2008 I purchased a WD My Book Studio Edition 1 TB with triple connection (firewire, usb2.00, eSata). It came with NO SOFTWARE although the box stated it should have a software CD. I downloaded the drivers from the WD site but it still didn't show up as a drive in Windows XP. I tried using the firewire and the USB cables to no avail.
FINALLY, I got it working by using PARAGON PARTITION MAGIC 8.5. Apparently the space on the WD was unformatted and unallocated, so it wasn't visible. After partitioning it, formatting it and allocating a drive letter, it workds like a charm.

I've fixed it.
The drive sucks -- never buy one. But.. if you do have one and it's not working, try this.
First, let me explain the problem with my drive. It didn't have any power going to it -- it worked fine for a few weeks and then when I'd plug it into my Mac via 6-pin firewire -- NOTHING!
I cracked the stupid thing open... took out the hard drive and put it into a new external drive case and BAM! It works. Yahooo,

Hey mybook 500 gig quit working and i unplugged it from the power strip to a wall plug and windows saw it and worked fine. WTF EXPLAIN THAT?

Everyone in this thread is coming from a working hard drive not one where it didnt work at start. This is an inappropriate solution.

With a brand new 500Gb My Book Essential 2.0, which did not show up in my list of HDs at first, I had to reformat to NTFS (it comes as a FAT32 formatted drive). Since the reformat, it is truly a plug and play device which can be see by all my machines and laptops now. Try it.

1) If your drive is not showing at all, it could be a simple USB conflict / malfunction
2) If the HD shows up but as a local disk / Unformatted media then you could use Testdisk to repair / restore the partition
3) Try to plug it on another PC to rule out windows from the problem.
Please explain what appears in your computer in detail...
