Question about Western Digital My Book Essential Edition (WDG1U5000N) 500 GB Hard Drive

16 Answers

Western Digital My Book

I read the problems several individuals are having with My Book 500GB Essentials. I was using this external HD for a while with no problems all of the sudden it does not show up in as a drive (E:). I read that Cyrylthewolf has a solution and so does Incubus_DZ. However I cannot find out what steps they took to solve it. Please could you help me.

my wd500 shows up in my computer screen, it is not in the blue color that it usually show up in. i move the mouse on top of it, it shows that 365 is used up. i open it then when i go with the mouse over one of the files it shows it is empty. i even go further by opening the folder and sure enough their is nothing in it. what could be wrong. i already defrag it with no success. what can be wrong?

  • hil333 Dec 08, 2007

Yeah mine either. It even shows the icons at first. I click into the folders and there is nothing there. It seems that when I back out and go back into the drive, that it shows less and less of what should be there. Then it just quits noticing the drive altogether. weird

This device I've owned and used perfectly with no problems for 5 months. Starting yesterday it does not show up as a hard drive under my computer. Disk management shows nothing for this drive. Devices shows it as working properly.Same thing occurs on my work laptop. It shows up under hard drives in devices but not in disk management or my computer. Its as if it knows its a usb device but refuses to assign it a volume or realize its a hardrive on both computers. Tried rebooting swapping different usb ports, different machines, different usb cables, rebooting. Running out of ideas besides dead harddrive and working usb controller.

  • JensS Dec 15, 2007

Got exactly the same problem as described with the ticking sound. Tried different USB ports and different PCs (even different O/S) but with no luck. The ticking is quite unnerving - my ancient C64 Floppy Disk Drive produced similar sounds when it needed adjustments to the read/write head...

4 days that our WD MyBook Essential has no longer been recognised by Windows XP ...tried restarting, cleanup, defrag and two other laptops but shows in all 3 as Local Disk - needs formatting....everything on it can't be lost....now an e mail arrives saying there is a new solution to your problem...Presto! I'm directed into a stream of I don't know how many people all saying the same thing on this site....not very impressed and now very worried

I had the same problem. It worked properly in the first a couple of months, then all of sudden it was not shown in mm Computer. Contacting WD customers services, but did not get real solutions and wasted a lot time with them.

New, 11/2007: Western Digital My Book Studio Edition 500 GB. Used once for backup on my new iMac with OS 10.5. Dismounted prior to going on vacation. Returned and hard drive is not recognized by the PC. There is no icon. Tried FireWire 800 to 800 and USB connectivity, even LaCie cables, but the PC does not recognize the device is connected. The hard drive did turn on and there was warmth, but not excessive. The HD was not mistreated, and it's only six weeks old. What a waste of good money.

Same thing for me, my 500GB My Book worked fine for almost 2 months, then suddenly it won't appear in My Computer anymore as a lettered drive. It does show up in Device Manager, and even the WD Diagnostics program, when run, says that all is well with the drive. WD Customer Support first said that Windows might have damaged a partition, which sounds like ******** to me. They next suggested plugging it directly into a wall socket, rather than a power strip, because they have heard that this solution works for others. That, in my opinion, is not a solution. If an external drive can't function properly just because it's plugged into a power strip, then something is wrong with the drive.

I've the Mybook Pro II 1TB drive almost full with about 8 years worth of information on it! Mu last backup was about 8 months ago. It was working fine until yesterday. Now it's just not seen in explorer or disk management. I've tried on three different PCs two Vista & one XP and they all have the same issue. It ** appears ** to be recognised as a USB device, system makes the usual new USB sound. Device manager shows the device & says it's working properly. The drive spins up with no strange noises & then goes quiet. Then nothing! I've tried the drive on a power block and on a direct power connection, which seems a bit of an illogical fix. I did read on the WD site that if the inner and Outer rings spin around it's possibly an overheat issue with the drive. I did open the casing & the drive was extremley hot. I've left if off over night & will test again the evening and let you know if this makes a difference.

I also have the same Problem, the Western Digital My Book 320GB will not show as a E drive it will not show up at all, the pc reports a malfunction

  • danh190 Feb 16, 2009

I have the same type of an Issue. though mine is recognized but will not open wants to reformat. Gives error that the drive is not formatted. Was working great then just stopped

  • Anonymous May 18, 2009

Solution #8 helped me a great deal and i've decided to give up on this drive. Warranty has expired as well.
Perhas I may consider a recovery by a 3rd party after all, but that's probably gonna costs me.
Btw, it's a My Book Essentials 400 gig (yes, 400) drive with a bad head according to the sound link in solution #8. /**irrelevant = Which happend to be posted on my birthday last year/

    Thanks zzptichka

If your harddrive is showing up in your device manager but not in my computer then its a drive path issue. Try this: right click on my computer then manage, next click disk drives, the drive in question should be on the list as a blank space. All you have to do is right click on the drive and choose assign drive letter. Hopefully this helps.

This is what I did. The Safely Remove Hardware recognized m
y hard drive, but all of the sudden it had no drive letter. Try this... its working for me so far, not through formatting but I think that its gonna work, I already assigned a drive letter. Seems to be working...

1. go to START>admin tools>computer management>storage>disk management>

2. my hard drive was listed after I plugged my usb back in

3. It showed it as WD MYBOOK 500, but it said it was not initialized
4.right click the hard drive in question
5. select change drive letter/paths
6. if its not showing yet on my computer select extend volume
7. it will reformat, but it will get it working..... I'm not sure if I have lost all of my storage yet or not , will update...

hope this works lads!

=)

Okay, I was having the same problem as the rest of you, and decided to try what sounded to me like a very unlikely fix. That unlikely fix cured it. I unplugged the cord from my power strip and plugged it directly into the wall, and it worked. All is well with things now. Blew me away, but I'm now a happy camper.

Sound like the drive has bad heads...
Here's a good article about problems with these drives with all the sounds: http://datacent.com/datarecovery/hdd/western_digital

I use firewire connection. When it is not recognised I unplug it from the computer so that it shuts down then remove the power cable from the back and reattach it. Does the trick nearly every time.

havent plugged it into the mains directly cause i dont have a socket near my desk

I had the same problem. When the drive warms up it shuts down. Unplug the drive and let it cool down or throw it in the frezzer for an hour or so. That will give you enough time to recover your information but as soon as it warms up again, it will disappear or look as though its blank. Then throw it in the garbage.

I rebooted my pc and my passport stopped working. IF I click the drive it said that it was unformmated, tried scavenger to get my data back and it didn't get the 4 gb files. tried several other programs and non got the big files. until I found Ontrack EasyRecovery Professional and chose data recovery and run an advanced recovery. I highlighted problem drive where the small ball representing the hard drive is, and to the right is an advance option button click. under file system scan tab select ntfs on the down arrow in file system click ok. If the next button is not click able highlight DW [465.75 GB] then next. every single file big and small will be recovered. after that, use EASEUS Partition Master 6.0.1 Professional Edition format disk, as a right now I'm moving back all data recovered to the disk. Give it a try

Concur. I just brought a WD 500gig. It shows up fine in the BIOS and in Devise Manager but there was no sign of it in Explorer. As mentioned above I went into My_Computer-->Manage-->Disk_Management and the drive was there but with a warning symbol. Simply it wasn't formatted! I make a primary partition and am currently formatting, taking ages but it now has a valid drive letter.

On May 19, 2008 I purchased a WD My Book Studio Edition 1 TB with triple connection (firewire, usb2.00, eSata). It came with NO SOFTWARE although the box stated it should have a software CD. I downloaded the drivers from the WD site but it still didn't show up as a drive in Windows XP. I tried using the firewire and the USB cables to no avail.

FINALLY, I got it working by using PARAGON PARTITION MAGIC 8.5. Apparently the space on the WD was unformatted and unallocated, so it wasn't visible. After partitioning it, formatting it and allocating a drive letter, it workds like a charm.

I've fixed it. The drive sucks -- never buy one.  But.. if you do have one and it's not working, try this.
First, let me explain the problem with my drive.  It didn't have any power going to it -- it worked fine for a few weeks and then when I'd plug it into my Mac via 6-pin firewire -- NOTHING!
I cracked the stupid thing open... took out the hard drive and put it into a new external drive case and BAM!  It works. Yahooo,

Everyone in this thread is coming from a working hard drive not one where it didnt work at start. This is an inappropriate solution.

With a brand new 500Gb My Book Essential 2.0, which did not show up in my list of HDs at first, I had to reformat to NTFS (it comes as a FAT32 formatted drive). Since the reformat, it is truly a plug and play device which can be see by all my machines and laptops now. Try it.

1) If your drive is not showing at all, it could be a simple USB conflict / malfunction

2) If the HD shows up but as a local disk / Unformatted media then you could use Testdisk to repair / restore the partition

3) Try to plug it on another PC to rule out windows from the problem.

Please explain what appears in your computer in detail...

I cannot copy files FROM my Western Digital 500GB

Hi,

Check the file system of your hard drive. If your PC is recognizing it, check if its a FAT or NTFS. If it is NTFS then you have to reformat it using your Mac and choose FAT. Mac OS recognizes NTFS as a read only drive. If you plan using it with your PC and MAC you should format it using your mac and choose MS-DOS in disc Utility. You cannot format the drive using your PC Computer with a FAT file system because of the capacity. Only Mac can format it with a FAT file system.
