Question about Palm Tungsten E2 Handheld

1 Answer

Broken Screen Hello, the screen on the unit cracked and you can see a lot of black liquid. However, none of the liquid is leaking and I was wondering if there was a way to fix this problem myself. I don't know where I could find a replacement screen or if it's even possible to do this repair myself. Thanks.

Re: Broken Screen

The black liquid means the display is damaged beyond repair. That's the liquid crystal (LC) in the display (LCD). Where you send it for repairs would depend on the manufacturer, the store you bought it from, and if you have a service plan or not, but it's not something you can do yourself unfortunately. Been there too :(

Here's the link to the repair information page on the Palm website:

The touchscreen of my Z22 is broken

The Z22 is a bullet-proof device for securely saving your personal data, and full marks go to the team at PALM for its solid design. However, the AGE of the Z22, over the last decade, results in 3 problems - the batteries are all dying, and the delicate plastic touchscreen top layer is deteriorating - simply through AGE. When you say the touchscreen is "Broken", I would guess you mean that it does not respond to touch commands from the black plastic stylus that sits in the slot on the back, side, of the unit, when stored. I have never actually seen or heard of a screen that is physically "broken" - like the thousands of iPod, iPhone, Motorola RAZOR, and other touch screen phones that you see today, with cracks running across the broken GLASS. It "Could" happen that the glass screen under the top plastic touch layer is, actually "BROKEN", with the resulting cracks, but this is unlikely, since the trim around the screen is raised a HUGE distance, compared to today's touchscreens.
You can easily replace the screen for $9 if you wait for free shipping from CHINA, or, you can try a few tricks I learned on my Z22 over the years. I have put it in the freezer - which worked temporarily, heated it with a hair dryer - which worked temporarily, and peeled the top plastic layer off the screen- which worked temporarily. I have also replaced the screen with a new one. It is IMPERATIVE to put a hard plastic cover on the Z22 at all times- or you will eventually loose the screen again...

I hope this helps you to get your Z22 back up and running

    have fun
    good luck

    Broken screen

No the only way to fix it would be to take it to someone. Cracked screens do not have an at home fix, plus if the backlight or bulb has shattered then you'll need a new one.

The touch-screen on my Mio Digiwalker c310 pocket GPS navigation unit is mostly broken. Some regions still respond properly to touch, but most of it barely responds if at all. Looks like it got water in...

The connection to the glass is usually through a series of small conductive rubber strips around the perimeter (like a gasket). If the pressure on the rubber is released slightly, it may not touch the glass or the circuit board on the other side. The pressure is held mechanically when the assembly is clamped together.
Liquids could short the rubber strips causing unpredictable display and touch screen operation. It would need to be dismantled and cleaned.
Another possibility is the ribbon wire to the LCD assembly is loose or even cracked so the traces are broken apart in the ribbon.
The LCD assembly is difficult to repair by dismantling. I wouldn't recommend it.

    Dropped PDA

You don't have to crack the screen if it is LCD. The "bleeding into the screen" and "black lines" could be symptoms of leaking liquid from the damage/impact of being dropped. Where you send it for repairs would depend on the manufacturer, the store you bought it from, and if you have a service plan or not.

Let us know what the situation is.

Firstly this depends on whether the touch screen is cracked or just the outer layer is scratched badly.  If you see cracked glass or a liquid in the screen then the touch screen is broken. I have personally had this happen to one of my PDAs and after doing some research is the best bet for getting an ipaq repaired reliably.  However touch screens are very expensive.  I just looked at the site and a new screen for your PDA is $227.  I believe that is the price just for the part but not totally sure.  Your best bet would either be replace it yourself maybe buying a broken PDA of the same screen type on ebay and try to replace it yourself (which is very difficult) or just upgrade and buy a new PDA.  However no matter what happens I strongly suggest buying an aluminum case.  They are relatively cheap and will save you in the long run.  The invisible screen protectors are nice as well against scratching.  If you have any questions don't be afraid to contact me.  And by the way this is my first post so any feedback would be great reguardless.

    Broken Screen Life Drive

You can get a repair kit here: or just use the link to learn what tools you'll need. In parts alone it can reach 200$, you'll have to google for it. There's a chance that you only cracked the touch screen, and not the LCD, which changes the picture, and can cut the cost by more than half. I can attach below a picture of a cracked LCD, and another of a damaged touchscreen, so you can see the difference, just note that it's of an Ipaq, so might not be the same as yours. Good luck
