Problem for Apple iPhone Smartphone

IPhone won't shut off.

By DJHutton on Nov 12, 2007

" "
Okay, here's my problem. Earlier today, I was trying to check a missed call on my iPhone, and I tried to click the phone button, and the iPhone wouldn't let me click on anything, so I try to shut it off, and it acts like it's about to shut off (With that circle thing that lights up, like it's loading...the sign that tells you the iPhone is about to shut off.) and the iPhone has been like that for about an hour now, and won't shut off.

Can someone help me?

Thanks.

-   I am in the process of trying to restore my phone. It's hooked up right now. At first, it was stuck on the phone screen, where I could just make phone calls and such. I kept trying to turn my phone off, but no matter how many times I pushed it, it wouldn't turn off. Then on top of that, the home button wasn't working at all and it wouldn't recognize that I had plugged it in to charge. So I hope that this works out after restoring it and all. -   Guest

-   I have the same problem... early this morning (too) I checked my iPhone to see if I had a missed call. But some strange message apeared in the screen saying something about Mocha (the VNP program) and if I want to allow some number to connect... WTF was that!? Then I dsicovered I could'nt go to tha main screen. When I touch the home button once nothing happens, but twice it takes me to the favorites.
The first thing I tried is to shoot down my iPhone and reboot. But the shoot down button only worked for going to the lock screen.

I'm so scrared! I thing someone entered in my iPhone!
My iPhone is 2G and jailbreacked.
I have the openSSH installed and the Mocha VNC lite installed. I think that someone entered that way...

Can anybody help me!?-   jrmullat

From the apple.com website - the 2nd one worked for me:

If iPhone won't turn on, or the display freezes or doesn't respond
  1. Press and hold the Home button for at least six seconds, until the application you were using quits.
  2. If that doesn't work, turn iPhone off and turn it on again. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on top of iPhone for a few seconds until a red slider appears, and then slide the slider. Then press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
  3. If that doesn't work, reset iPhone. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

I had a similar problem. The iPhone went to a black screen and buttons wouldn't work at all, not even the shut down button. I pressed the shut down button together with the main function button (the one in the front) and it turned off. Afterwards, it turned on properly.

I had a similar problem, that is, the iPhone came up with that little circle thingy, and I figured out how to turn it off while this was happening (it was pretty scary since it was just out of the box!).

If it happens again, Hold down the home button and the sleep button at the same time and it should turn off.

Have a good one!

It's usually an issue with the logic board, so ultimately if you want to resolve it, the logic board needs to be replaced. Try to restore the iphone to exclude that it's a software issue, but if that doesn't work and If you're under warranty apple will likely give you a new one. If you're out of warranty you can attempt a self-repair if you're comfortable with opening devices like that, There are iPhone Repair guides that show you how at http://www.portatronics.com/guide. It's kind of a minor issue to take the risk of breaking things further though.

I had a similar problem with my iPhone seizing up- wouldn't go back to main screen or recognize that it was plugged in to charge- and when I tried to reset it by pushing both buttons simultaneously it just took a photo of the screen.  Just before I called Apple Care I took out my SIM card out of phone and then put it back in.  The screen unlocked temporarily and the next time I tried to reset- as prompted by Apple Care- it reset.  It did take longer than the estimated 30 seconds to get back to the standby screen- more like 1.5 minutes.  Now all seems to be fine.

u may have already fixed this by now, but mine was doing the exact same thing, until i plugged it into itunes and upgraded the software, it took about 20mins to do but eventually it worked and all has been fine since. Since then I have gone into setttings and there was an option saying when home button is pushed twice take me to the favourites list or something, so i have disabled that.

My Iphone 3g locked up today in the "phone" menu, and no matter what I did, I couldn't turn it off or reset it. The solution: I connected it to my computer, took a backup via iTunes (ticked all the right boxes in iTunes under the iPhone icon, also took extra backup of contacts into outlook), and clicked "restore" on the summary tab. The phone then reset itself to factory settings, started up normally, and then continued to restore almost everything I had on the phone, including address book, full txt msg history, photos, bluetooth pairings etc. It even manage to restore data in some of the downloaded apps from iTunes store (such as all voice recordings in AudioMemo). The only thing I have found so far that it didn't restore, understandably, was my music, which was no problems since I only downloaded it again from my iTunes. I am really amazed at how well it worked.

i have a jailbroken/unlocked (2g) iphone. When I tried to power off it never went to the slder screen asking me to power off. Now everytime I try to power on, about 20 seconds after the apple appears the circle thing starts spinning and then freezes. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Comment by haleysaylo, posted on Mar 02, 2009

I had the same problem...

First my IPhone would not exit away from the "Favorites" list,
Then it would not even allow me to use the home button to exit that application
Things continued to quit working...
It wouldn't turn off or even allow me to insert my password to gain access to the main screen after hitting the Sleep button.

BUT... after many tried things, resetting the phone worked! Just hold down the "Sleep" button on the top, while at the same time holding the "Home" button for at least ten seconds. The apple logo should come up and everything went back to normal for me after that.

Comment by horvatherwin, posted on Nov 16, 2008

my iphone just stays on the regular "slide to unlock screen" but it doesnt let me slide to unlock it................it doesnt let me turn it off or anything it just stays on the slide to unlock screen.....then I thought maybe I won't charge it and it might die so I havent charged it in about 4 days and the battery sign didn't even go down a little bit, it still has full battery so can anybody help?? please

Comment by ljw1949, posted on Nov 08, 2008

The only thing that will show up when I "slide to unlock" is the phone part.  When I press the usual button to go from mode to mode, nothing happens.  I thought maybe turning the phone all the way off and then on again might work, but it won't turn off.  Will go to black screen, but no matter how long I hold it, won't turn off completely.  At one point, the play/pause part of the iPod screen showed up at the top of the wallpaper screen.  How can I fix?

Comment by emzicle666, posted on Sep 13, 2008

i have exactly the same problem. I sent a txt i think, then the next time i went to the iphone it was on "favorites" and takes me there even if I click the home button once. I can't get to any screens at all except favorites, recents, contacts, keypad, and voicemail! When I press the top button to turn it off it just goes to sleep then i get the "slide to unlock" when turning back on. Charger won't work, and itunes is about to update to 2.1 so hopefully that ill solve it, I'm very wary of holding both buttons together because my last iphone had a problem and that was the cause of it, it was in a continual loop of never turning on just loading loading!

Comment by tehtrix7, posted on Sep 13, 2008

so i was playing labyrinth and after maybe 10 minutes, if not more, i clicked the home screen button which after a slight lag took me to my phone favorites. I tried to go to the home screen once again but my attempts failed. my iphone would only work on as a phone. i tried shutting it down, but when i pressed the button on the top right of the iphone it only went to sleep mode and wouldn't turn my phone off no matter how long i held down the button. i then pressed the home button and the off button together and this turned my screen all white and then nothing worked at all, all i could do was put it to sleep, and if i turned it back on it was just white. what i did was plug it in and once itunes recognized it, i restored it and updated it as well as backed it up. now it's fine:) hope my advice helped:D

I am having a problem with my iphone. I just got the new upgrade 2.0.2. for my phone 5 days ago (I have the original Iphone). I downloaded some new apps from the apps store within those 5 days and did not have any problems. Today I was listening to my ipod part of my phone without any headphones and also texting. After about one hour of listening to music and texting I tried to look at my home page so i clicked on my home button and all that showed up was my contact favorites. So i tried to turn my phone off because I couldnt go to my home page but all it does is lock the phone the off slide doesnt even show up. so i tried to put it in my charger and it wont even charge its like my phone is frozen. but the only things i can use on my phone are my contacts, texting, and my ipod on my phone. all of the other parts i cant see.

it wont shut down i turned the power off but just got the circal off lines 4 2hours now

Comment by laurenk23, posted on Aug 18, 2008

I don't have a solution unfortunately. In addition to the iphone not shutting off, when it is not being used, the phone will light up after a minute, utilizing unnecessary battery. I am not sure what to do about it. I am using firmware 2.1.

I used the power button on the top to turn off the iphone. I moved the slider and got to the small circle of lines showing that it was powering off. It has been powering off for over an hour now. I have tried it docking it into the charger, and plugging it into my lap top. Neither one has had any impact. I have had my iphone for almost a year and this has never happened.

Mine just did the same thing - lit up but wouldn't let me slide to unlock it and wouldn't respond to my attempts to shut it down. I held the sleep button on the upper right and the home button simultaneously until it finally shut down...
