I ordered a new battery for NOOk BNRV510 but video does not show how to remove the metal back ?

When doing a battery replacement on modern phones, if it is your first time, you should order the battery with an opening tool kit. Most modern phones don't just open. It's kind of risky if you have never done it because if you don't put it back together properly then you could crack the screen. If you are at all nervous about this then I suggest you find a shop that will do it for you. Sometimes there are little kiosks in the mall that will do this type of work.

Shows 99% won't open and can't shut down

You can first try doing what's called doing a Soft Reset. It's the first and preferred method to try as you don't lose any files or settings. Hold the power button until the Nook turns itself off. In most cases that will be twenty seconds or more. Then turn the power back on by holding the power button down for about two seconds. Hopefully this will allow you to complete a normal boot process. The second and more dramatic way to get a working Nook back is what's called doing a Hard Reset. This process will put your Nook back to "Just Out of the Box" mode. You will lose any files and settings stored internally inside the Nook itself. The good part in all this is it won't touch anything stored externally on your external SD Cards. To do a Hard Reset Turn the NOOK off completely. Hold the Power button and Home (n) buttons. The device will turn on. Continue to hold both buttons until the device shuts off once again (~15-20 seconds). Turn the device on normally. It will prompt for a factory reset. Press the Home button twice to confirm. ------- The important part in the above is to be sure you start the Nook via holding down both the power button and the Home (n) buttons at the very same time and keep them both pressed down until the Nook turns itself off.

Nook hd does not play sound

Unless you have lots of experience of microelectronics there will be no repairs you can do to your Nook and it would be foolish to try.

There might be something in one of the menus that is switched off or needs changing in order to play audio. The device is considered to be a media player.

You say you have only recently bought the device - in that case if it is faulty it should be returned to the supplier under warranty.

How do you unlock your nook, when you forget your password?

From what I have found on this issue it looks like you will need to restore your nook back to factory settings. Any books you bought and backed up from Barnes & Nobles should re-download once you have restored the device and re-registered.

To complete a factory fallback:

1. Turn your device completely off.

2. Power up the device while holding in both the power button and the physical "n" button at the bottom of your NOOKcolor.

3. The device should begin to power up and you will see the welcome screen however keep holding both buttons down and the device will power down.

4. Repeat step 2.

5. When the welcome screen comes up, release both buttons.

6. The device will begin to power on and then a window will pop up asking if you would like to restore your device. Press the "n" button once and again to confirm.

7. The NOOKcolor will restore itself to full factory defaults and will startup as if it were brand new.

8. Re-register your device (while connected to a WiFi network) and you will start over fresh

When trying download material from B&N, such as magazines, a window pops up and says format not supported. Many appear to be Nook format. I purchased a magazine and can't download. Please help. Thank...

If you look on the B&N site there is the ability to download Nook for the PC. You can go to the Barnes & Noble website at http://www.barnesandnoble.com/u/nook-for-pc/379002322.
Then once you download and install the software you will be able to read your book and any new ones you purchase.
Enjoy your Book!

I recently bought a new book and my nook wont let me view it it keeps telling me to put in my name and credit card number

In order to start using your Nook, you'll need to register it through the Barnes & Noble website - I've shared the steps below. Once you've registered it, you will be able to start purchasing and reading books. Please note that you will need to set-up a B&N.com account first. That is done on BN.com and simply click "new user account." Once you have set that up, follow the below Nook set-up steps.
NOOK Set-Up Steps
  1. Charge your new NOOK 3G or NOOK Wi-Fi for 3-hours from a wall outlet using the Power Adapter and USB Cable packed at the bottom of your NOOK box.
  2. Turn on your NOOK by pressing the power button at the top.
  3. Connect to Wi-Fi.
  4. Register your device by entering your BN.com account email.
  5. Tap the down arrow button in the lower right corner of your color touchscreen.
  6. Enter your BN.com password.
  7. Tap Submit

Unable to get NOOK to work with Linksys WRT54GS

To log into your WRT54G, open a Web browser on a computer that's connected to your router and go to http://192.168.1.1/ - the default username is admin and the default password is blank (leave the field empty).

----

In the Setup tab, Basic Setup subtab:

DHCP Server should be set to Enable.

If you had to change this setting, be sure to click the Save Settings button.

----

In the Wireless tab, Basic Wireless Settings subtab:

The first data item is Wireless Network Mode. For reasonable performance, this should be set to either Mixed or G-Only. You should be able to connect your NOOK even if it's set to B-Only, but that would be a very unusual setting and would give slower networking.

Wireless Network Name (SSID) is the name of your Wi-Fi network. If it still says 'linksys', change it to something different-but be aware that you'll need to reconnect all of your current Wi-Fi devices using the new SSID. That's a pain in the behind, but using the default SSID will cause you lots of connection grief if someone else installs a Wi-Fi router with the default SSID, because your devices won't be able to tell them apart. Write down your SSID, being careful to distinguish capital letters from small letters, so you'll know what it is.

Wireless SSID Broadcast should be set to Enable. Otherwise, your NOOK won't see your network. You could type in your SSID, but that's a pain in the behind that you don't need. There's no reason not to enable SSID broadcast.

If you had to make any changes to these settings, be sure to click the Save Settings button.

----

In the Wireless tab, Wireless Security subtab:

Security Mode: write down which of the choices is selected:
  • Disable
  • WPA Pre-Shared Key
  • WPA RADIUS
  • RADIUS
  • WEP
I say to write this down just in case you run into more trouble and need to ask someone for help.

If 'Disable' is selected: you have no security on your Wi-Fi. Anyone can use your Internet connection, and anyone can listen in if they're in range. If you send unencrypted passwords, email, etc., they could see what you send. Most public Wi-Fi systems (McDonald's, Starbucks, B&N, etc.) have no security.

If either 'RADIUS' choice is selected: these settings are used for large organizations with stringent security requirements and a dedicated authentication server. Your NOOK cannot connect if either of these settings is used. You almost certainly don't want to be using either of these for a home system.

If the 'WPA Pre-Shared Key' choice is selected: WPA offers good security for Wi-Fi and is the best of these choices for home use.
  • WPA Algorithms should be set to TKIP. This is the normal setting for WPA. I don't know if your NOOK will connect if you set it to AES, which is normally used with WPA2 rather than WPA.
  • WPA Shared Key is the access key for your network. Write it down, being careful to distinguish capital letters and small letters. You'll definitely need this key in order to connect your NOOK or any other Wi-Fi device to your router. Don't change this unless you're prepared to go back and reconnect your other Wi-Fi devices. Unfortunately, there are some punctuation marks that you can't enter on the NOOK keyboard, and if your WPA passphrase contains one of those you may need to change the passphrase in order to connect your NOOK.
If 'WEP' is selected: the WEP security system is a weak system, easily cracked by knowledgeable hackers. However, many older wireless devices and some of the cheapest new wireless devices can't handle anything better than WEP. This isn't a good situation, but you work with what you've got.
  • Default Transmit Key should be set to 1.
  • Passphrase is not important. It is not your network's access key. Ignore it.
  • Key 1 is the access key for your network. Write it down. It will be either 10 or 26 characters, containing only the numbers 0-9 and the letters A-F. You will definitely need this key in order to connect your NOOK or any other Wi-Fi device to your router. There's no reason to change this, and if you do change it you'll have to go back and reconnect your other Wi-Fi devices.

If you had to make any changes to these settings, be sure to click the Save Settings button. Any changes in this section will also require that your existing Wi-Fi devices be reconnected.

----

In the Wireless tab, Wireless MAC Filter subtab:

  • Wireless MAC Filter should be set to Disable. If it's enabled and set to Permit only mode, only the devices listed on the MAC Filter List can use your Wi-Fi. If your NOOK isn't in the list, you can't connect your NOOK. Bad ju-ju, huh?
If you had to change this setting, be sure to click the Save Settings button. Changing this should not require your current Wi-Fi devices to reconnect.

It's possible to add your NOOK to the MAC Filtering list and then turn MAC Filtering back on. But that's beyond the scope of this posting. I will, however, mention that your NOOK's MAC address is listed in its Settings screen-on page 2 if it's a NOOK 3G.

----

In the Wireless tab, Advanced Wireless Settings subtab:

  • Authentication Type should be set to Auto. Do not set it to 'Shared Key'; this won't work with NOOK. Auto should work with any WEP-capable devices. If it's set to 'Shared Key', change it to 'Auto'-this shouldn't affect any of your current Wi-Fi devices.
If you had to change this setting, be sure to click the Save Settings button. Changing this should not require your current Wi-Fi devices to reconnect.

----

You should now be able to connect your NOOK using the SSID and the access key that you wrote down.

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it and give a testimonial for my response. Happy Holidays!

Thanks, Joe
