My Range Rover 2.7 diesel starts but then chugs on a very low idle, no throttle response and black smoke, what could be wrong?

low compression /valves
if its hard to start glow plugs

Black smoke is caused by excess fuel that has entered the cylinder area and cannot be burned completely. Another term for excess fuel is "running rich." Poor fuel mileage is also a common complaint when black smoke comes out of the tailpipe. Black smoke out the tailpipe is the least cause for alarm. Excess fuel will usually effect engine performance, reduce fuel economy, and produce a fuel odor. How did the fuel get into the cylinder in the first place? Some of the causes of excess fuel are a carburetor that is out of adjustment, a faulty fuel pump, a leaky fuel injector, or a faulty engine computer or computer sensor. If black smoke is present, check the engine oil as in the white smoke example to make sure excess fuel has not contaminated it. Do not start the engine if a heavy, raw fuel smell can be detected in the engine oil. Call your mechanic and advise him of what you have found. What's the color of the smoke? white, white with a blueish color, or black?

take it to a dealer with a good desel tech may have a bad injector pump but they are very expencive so make sure thats the problem dont go to a side of the road shop with no idea how to test them

if turbo charged diesel , have the turbo inspected and check the hoses for tight at connections

has it been driven too many kilometers ?
This should not happen at this age (2006) if not driven too much. If it is under manufacturers warranty then dont wait and take it to the service center as this could happen due to the oil burn within the engine. Atleast not at idle.

indicates an idle control sensor or other throttle / accelerator sensors

I would change your throttle position sensor (TPS) or at least check all related wiring, fuses and relays concerning this device. It is located on the outside of the throttle body at the end of the throttle plate shaft. Its function is to send a an electrical signal to the ECU that correspnds to the position of the throttle plate. Your TPS is not sending a signal to the ECU so the ECU does not know to inject more fuel in response to the throttle being opened. The call for more fuel in the absence of immediate input from the TPS is being made to the ECU by the Manifold air pressure sensor but this can a take a second or two to respond to pressure changes, hence the hesitation in acceleration. One really quick way to check is to simply disconnect the TPS electrical connector. If it were running normally you will notice an immediate change in engine idle, as your is faulty you will notice no difference

Hi! You may have a faulty ECU (engine control unit). The ECU controls the air and fuel ratio, if its faulty it can really emits black smoke. Hope this helps and good luck!

Pull the filters and ck for plastic or o-ring in wrong place. Something is up in the filter.
