Question about Panasonic DMR-HS2 DVD Recorder

1 Answer

HS2 doesn't turn on

I have had this unit for a few years. It's a great machine, but last week it did something that it's never done before. I had left it recording a program to the HD while i went to work. I had done this many, many times before with no problems. But when I came home this time the machine was turned off. I went to turn it back on and it looked like it was ready to come back on. The HD icon was "spinning" and then it just went right back into off mode. I tried again and again but to no avail. I tried switching from HDD to DVD but that doesn't help. I can hear what sounds like the HD spinning but then it just dies. I had thought that the four digits on the machine's LED were the time, but they are not. They look like a four digit code of some kind. It's not always the same, either. Last night it went to 5542. This morning it was some number in the 7000s. Any ideas what's going on?

Also, before I take this thing in for service, I have a DVD in the drive. Is there any way to force that drive open so I can get that DVD? I need to return it to the store before they try to make me buy it and I don't trust the repair shop to keep it safe for me (and, I'm running out of time on the rental).

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Re: HS2 doesn't turn on

Try holding the power on/off button for about 15 sec to power off completely, then push the DVD button. that may work.

Doesn't load the disk

Someone needs to open it to SEE what is happening--if the unit holds more than one disc (model seems to indicate that) you likely have a mechanism problem with something jammed or even broken--mechanism could also be out of alignment which is a task for a pro.

Look and see what is happening is first thing needed here.

Won't recognise DVD Ram and non-finalised discs from own recordings.

Usually, the U11 error code in a Panasonic DVD player indicates an optical problem. You could of course try doing a cleaning using a CD cleaner normally readily from computer parts stores. Alternately, you can open the unit up and do a manual cleaning with soft bristle brush and/or cotton buds. Other than that, it could be indicative of a weakening laser eye which of course would require parts replacement.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you

need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

I have a Samsung DVD-v5650 which has always worked great. A couple of days ago, it suddenly stopped playing dvd's. We purchased a new dvd and it will start to play, then it will get choppy and show...

That sounds like a classic case of DVD laser and spindle motor failure (traverse unit). The squares you mention are pixels, the picture pixelates and breaks up, then freezes (caused by voltage changes in the laser and the motor speed). Being as this is not a DVD recorder, it is probably not economical to repair. You can try carefully cleaning the laser assembly (tips on how to do this may be found elsewhere on FixYa or similar forums) and/or spindle hub. If that does not solve the issue, sadly, you would be reduced to just the VCR part (or you could purchase a new player since the cost of such would be cheaper than repairs to this - assuming parts were available).

Not the best news, but you can try the simple in-home cleaning of the unit first before taking any further action.

Sony BDP-S350 - made a mistake in setup, cant get a signal

Just had this problem, this is the button config for master reset when you have no picture: Left Button x 3 Down Button x 7 OK (Centre Button) OK (Centre Button) Down Button x 6 OK (Centre Button) Left Button x 1 OK (Centre Button) OK (Centre Button) Wait a few seconds for settings to complete, then switch off. When you switch back on, you should have a picture and be back at the language setting. Hope this is of some use.

My tevion dvd recorder does the same thing. What I do is, I stand in front of the unit with the remote in my left hand (because I'm right handed), and with the tips of my fingers on the right hand I tap the top of the player while I hit the eject button on the remote. Some times I have to do this more than once to get the door to open. This is one of the quirks of the tevion dvd recorder made for Wal-Mart. I,m not sure if there is a solution but this is my second one and other than this the unit works great. It also seems to help if you leave a disk, (blank or other wise), inthe machine and try not to let the machine set for more than a week before turning it on and trying to eject it even if you are not going to use it at that time.

belt is loose or gear is broke, if out of warranty you can try to force it or open the cover and see if you can push the door.

Updating s/w (assume this is software?)

Hi how long do you wait until you turn it off? the user manual says that his process can take a long time so if its only been a few minutes might want to wait a while longer, user manual gives an idea of times. check the manual for setting your unit only to update in standby mode, so this process doesnt happen while your watching TV etc

Problem about turning on

Hi, seems that the ribbon cable, which connects HDD & DVD & video-processing card isn't properly fixed to the stripe contactors. If one of both drives isn't connected, ( even on some contacts only) the other doesn't work, resulting in the described fault. The unit won't boot up.
Had this fault atime ago and had to push the ribbons a little harder into the connector and glued it.
Works since then about a year or so.
By the way, I have a 80 Gb replace-HDD, different brand, as the original one failed. NO problems at all, just louder than before, as it isn't the superquiet Maxtor.
If you try to read the unmounted HDD in a PC, the filesystem is changed or disturbed, resulting in the need to FORMAT, when putting it back into the Pana. Done this just by curiosity, all videos gone then. Even with a HDD, that works properly in the Pana.
