It seems I have a similar problem trying to hook up a PS3. My DVD/Home Theatre doesn't have any video inputs so I have the PS3 running directly to my TV (HDMI) and wanted to use the TVs optical audio out back to the DVD/Home Theatre reciever. Seems the optical audio output isn't working. Is this TV capable of converting HDMI audio to optical out???

I have my playstation 3 plugged into the tv via the HDMI but the optical out is broadcasting in 5.1 surround. Am I missing something in the settings?

Optical output not working at all.

  • Anonymous Jan 06, 2009

Not an expert, but had the same problem. Read my TV's manual and it specifically states that you cannot use optical out when hdmi is plugged in.

Really sucks because I had to use rca to my reciever instead of optical and lost that wonderful surround sound

What cables do i need to connect to a t.v. to get surround sound please

It depends what the source of the sound is. If you are using a dvd player or hifi/dvd combo that has surround, dobly pro logic, surround simulation or cinema will have HDMI, Optical, Digital outputs. The newer items use the HDMI to send Audio and Visual signals to the Hifi. If will either have to do the simulation on your hifi if it has that feature. You can also use the SPDiF or Optical cable from your source to the hifi. If all that is missing...the standard 3-way RCA cable (Yellow,Red and Black) will do where yellow is video and the red and black is the stereo source of sound.

Ps3 doesnt give out a surround sound output

In this configration you will not get surround sound. Because tv is not able to reproduse the surround sound through its out put from the HDMI input. You have to connect the HDMI of PS3 to the Onkyo receiver and the HDMI Monitor Out of the Onkyo to the TV. This can only done if the Onkyo AVR Have HDMI IN/OUT option.

If not the connect the Optical out of PS3 to any one of the optical input of the Onkyo receiver.
After that you have to goto the setup Menu the Onkyo and assing the optical input in wich you have conncted the PS3.

Aslo the following setting in PS3

Menu>>> Settings >>> Sound Settings >>> Audio Output Settings >>> Select the connector..= DIGITAL OUTPUT (OPTICAL)

How connect toshiba tv to samsung home cinema whit hdmi? i connect but still no sound. i want watch tv but listen in cinema sistem

the hdmi jack on the tv is an INPUT jack, not an output. to use your reciever for tv sound, you have to find the audio output on the tv (most do not have an audio out, but some higher end tv's have a fiber-optic digital out, which may or may not be compatible with your surround sound reciever)

if your tv does not have an audio out, the only way to get the tv sound into the styereo is to use a tuner box, like a cable box or satelite box. tuner boxes always have either hdmi or stereo audio outputs.

to use hdmi with your surround sound, you are supposed to run HDMI OUTPUT from the tuner box or disk player into the HDMI INPUT of the stereo, and then run the HDMI OUTPUT of the stereo into the HDMI INPUT of the tv.

I have an LG TV with an LG HOME CINEMA SYSTEM problem is: watch dvd/blue ray - video fine sound fine (through speakers) watch tv / sky -- video fine sound None throughspeakers on...

There are two things that I can suggest.
1-Test your optical cables to make sure they a good on a known working source because they are very fragile and break very easily.
2-Try to eliminate the use of optical output from tv to receiver. There may be a problem from the HDMI to optical conversion at the tv. Instead, try running the audio directly from the source to the receiver, and let the tv deal with video input only.
Hope this helps,
Good Luck.

I have my ps3 connected to my t.v via HDMI, but want to get surround sound on my ps3, how can i do this as my receiver doesnt have optical or hdmi outputs?

Does your TV have any audio outputs at all? It is a new feature of a lot of TV's to have at least an Optical output. Use that to run back into your receiver if available.

I am unable to connect my sky+ HD box, surround system and LCD tv together.I was only sold a scart cable and HDMI cable with the surround but am sure I need an audio cable or optical cable with it! please...

you need the fibre optical cable, that connects from your dvd to your tv and then you need to set the output on your dvd to digi in, that can be done by pressing aux on cinema system remote or function on the system it self.
i hope this does fix your problem, if it does please rate.

Connecting ps3 to home cinema

For sound use the Digital Coax in, if the PS3 has digital out. Most HiFi home cinema systems have HDMI with all channels audio through HDMI. Check cinema settings to configure input for hdmi audio, also check PS3 audio output setting options to include all supported audio type by your receiver. It's not just a plug and play. Both systems need to gor through a user setup process to make sure they sync and play well with each other.

Panasonic multi connections

HDMI audio in this setup is a one way street. Audio will not come back from the TV to the audio system.
Sorry as you have not shown the model number I can not advise on the system fully.
However, it is standard on the current Panasonics to use Optical audio as a return feed or phonos.
Optical would be best as it carries full digital surround, whilst the phonos only carry "surround"
It may help for you to look a the new Panasonic web sit as there is now an interactive "How to connect your system"
