2 things the memory card and the recovery of your files.
Your camera was produced in 2005 and in those days only MMC and SD cards could be used. A few years later the SDHC came and 2011 SDXC came. devices are downward compatible. So newer cameras can use also SD cards. But older cameras can't use newer memory cards. Even a SDHC can't be used in your camera. And although I managed to buy a 4GB SD card a few years ago, now they only produce SDHC and SDXC cards. Yes be aware a 1 GB or 2 GB card now ar most of the time SDHC.
Check your card, when it says SDHC, don't try to us it, it won't work.

Then the photos from your parents. It looks we never have taken enough pictures.
When you have old memory cards, please don't use them till you checked if there are still "deleted" pictures on them.
Deleted is most of the time just clearing the pointers to the files. The files in most cases stay on the card.
Try to download some software from this site:
Memory Card Data Recovery
Then run the software, when you have a memory card in a memory card reader and see if it can find "deleted" pictures. Be aware when you use a card with "deleted" pictures, the space that came free, will be used to put new pictures there. SO don't use the cards till you did recover everything to the computer.

There are more free recover program's. I have one form Sandisk, I got it for free with a sands memory card. Login on that site to and see if they still have free program's for Sandisk users.

Canon power shot A610, will it support sundisk 16GB?

No. The A610 works with MMC and SD cards, 2GB or smaller. It will not work with higher-capacity SDHC cards.

I bought a new memory card for my Canon Power Shot SD 400 Digital Elph, but it has an error message that comes up. When I scrolled through the Menu to format the card, the format selection is grey and...

Your older camera can only work with 2GB or smaller standard SD cards. It is not capable of recognizing the newer format 4GB or higher SDHC cards. Fortunately, old format 2GB SD cards are relatively inexpensive these days, and may be purchased on Amazon if your local store no longer carries them.

Our schools Canon PowerShot SD450 memory card has no images or videos on it but the camera says memory full...help.

Make sure that the card is 2GB or smaller, the camera only supports SD not SDHC so it won't recognize a card larger then 2GB. If it's 2GB or smaller format it within the camera and then you should be good to go.

Hi there! I have a Canon PowerShot SD700 is. I have bought a Sandisk 8 GB. My camera cannot read it. It says: Memory Card Error. What can I do about it? Many thanks for your help

The SD700 works with MMC and SD cards. Your 8GB card is an SDHC card. While it fits into the slot, it is electronically incompatible and will not work. You need to use SD cards, which max out at 2GB.

Canon PowerShot SD 630 Digital Elph "Memory Card Error"

Hi,
I'm sorry to tell that PowerShot SD 630 does not support SDHC cards over 2 gig.
If you want the camera to take a card over 2 gig then you are stuck standard SD cards.
The other camera does support the card because it's a higher model.

Regards.

Memory card capacity for my older canon digital camera

Does you camera use CF cards?
If so the may work but some of the newer high tech CF cards are made for newer cameras.

It may be worth a shot to try the 2GB card and if it does not work, sell to someone who uses those.

My Powershot 450sd camera is not reading 4GB SDHC

Apparently IXUS 55 is not compatible with a 4GB SD card. Use a 2GB and you would be fine.

My Powershot 450sd camera is not reading 4GB SDHC

SDHC memory cards are relatively new, and are sadly compatible with only the newest model cameras. For your model camera, recommend a maximum 2GB standard SD card. Fortunately, these days a 2GB card is very inexpensive.
