WinXP Tips And Tricks, Winsock 2 repair

Repairing Damaged Winsock2

The symptoms when Winsock2 is damaged show when you try to release and renew the IP address using IPCONFIG...

And you get the following error message:

An error occurred while renewing interface internet': An operation was attempted on something that is not a socket.

Also Internet Explorer may give the following error message:
The page cannot be displayed Additionally, you may have no IP address or no Automatic Private IP Addressing (APIPA) address, and you may be receiving IP packets but not sending them.

There are two easy ways to determine if Winsock2 is damaged:

From the XP source files, go to the Support / Tools directory

Winsock Test Method 1
Run netdiag /test:winsock

The end should say Winsock test..... passed

Winsock Test Method 2

Run Msinfo32
Click on the + by Components
Click on the by Network
Click on Protocol
There should be 10 sections if the Winsock2 key is ok
MSAFD Tcpip [TCP/IP]
MSAFD Tcpip [UCP/IP]
RSVP UDP Service Provider
RSVP UDP Service Provider
MSAFD NetBIOS [\Device\NetBT_Tcpip...
MSAFD NetBIOS [\Device\NetBT_Tcpip...
MSAFD NetBIOS [\Device\NetBT_Tcpip...
MSAFD NetBIOS [\Device\NetBT_Tcpip...
MSAFD NetBIOS [\Device\NetBT_Tcpip...
MSAFD NetBIOS [\Device\NetBT_Tcpip...

If the name are anything different from those in this list, then likely Winsock2 is corrupted and needs to be repaired.
If you have any 3rd party software installed, the name MSAFD may be changed.
There should be no fewer than 10 sections.

To repair Winsock2

Run Regedit
Delete the following two registry keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock2

Restart the computer
Go to Network Connections
Right Click and select properties
Click on the Install button
Select Protocol
Click on the Add button
Click on the Have Disk butoon
Browse to the \Windows\inf directory
Click on the Open button
Click on the OK butoon
Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
Click on the OK button
Reboot

Good luck!

How to download and install apache on linux5

Hi Follow the below procedures.
How to install and start the Apache or httpd service under Linux

by Milind

Q. How do I install and start the Apache or httpd web server under Fedora core or Cent OS?

A. Apache HTTP Server is a free software/open source web server for Unix-like systems and other oses.

Apache features configurable error messages, DBMS-based authentication databases, and content negotiation. It is also supported by several graphical user interfaces (GUIs) which permit easier, more intuitive configuration of the server.

Use rpm command to install Apache under Linux. You can also use up2date or yum command to install the same.
Task: Install Apache/httpd under Fedroa Core/Cent OS Linux

Type the following command if you are using Fedora or Cent OS Linux:

# yum install httpd
Now, start the Apache/httpd
# chkconfig httpd on
# /etc/init.d/httpd start
Task: Install Apache/httpd under Red Hat Enterprise Linux

Type the following command
# up2date httpd
Start the Apache/httpd
# chkconfig httpd on
# /etc/init.d/httpd start
Task: Debian Linux httpd/Apache installation

Use apt-get command:
# apt-get install apache2
# /etc/init.d/apache2 start
Task: Verify that port 80 is open

# netstat -tulpn | grep :80

You can also install httpd from CDROM with rpm command:
# rpm -ivh httpd*
Configuration

Your server is started but you need to configure and use Apache as per your requirement. /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf (RHEL/Cent OS/Fedora Core Linux) or /etc/apache2/httpd.conf (Debian / Ubuntu Linux) configuration file. Use text editor such as vi to edit file. This file is very well documented or read official Apache configuration documentation for more information.

Not able to browse

  1. You may visit ftp.acer.ru/ for the wireless drivers.
  2. Try reinstalling your network adapters/ TCPIP. You can do that by typing these commands on the command prompt (start - Run - type cmd) netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt (enter) & netsh winsock reset
  3. You may also want to refresh the winsock files from the registry ..
Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock
Do one of the following steps, depending on the operating system:
For Windows XP, on the File menu, click Export.
In the Save in box, desktop.. type a name for the file in the File name box, and then click Save.

Right-click Winsock, and then click Delete. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.

Repeat steps 3 through 6 for the following subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock2

Note Each .reg file that you save must have a different name.

Apache 2.2

First, is it really necessary to restart the server? can you just restart the service from Administrative tools -> Services? (Not a solution but might help a little whilst you're looking for one :)

Is there a reason why you are running Apache on 8080? Is IIS on 80? If so, I wonder if it may be stealing 8080 from Apache when the Apache worker restarts after its maximum allowed run time. As to why IIS should be doing that, I have no idea :) Also, is Apache configured for SSL? If it is, then it will be trying to use port 443 as well, as may IIS - & thus the above error message may be due to both trying to use 443 rather than 80 or 8080.

If you really can't get this working then running Windows & Linux (a LAMP installation) under VMWare or something similar may be an option. It's not as drastic as it sounds - I've done this on a laptop PC & it works!

How do I port forward 80 and do apache home website on verizon westell

As I had mentioned earlier to another gentleman, who had a similar issue; those SOHO routers and modem/routers have issues with their advanced functionalities which includes port forwarding. The first thing you must do is - Make sure 'block anonymous internet requests', is disabled in the router's settings - Go to the following website http://www.t1shopper.com/tools/port-scanner/ - Try to see if there is a service running on port 80 If the port is open (which I believe would be a least possibility), there is something else we are missing here. Get back to me with further observations Good Luck
