Question about Western Digital 320GB MyBook External USB 2.0 Hard Drive

1 Answer

Western digital external hard drive

So I accidently pluged a higer voltage converter into my western digital hd and have most likley cooked somthing inside besides my actual drive. My guess was a capacitor or some other componet. Is this fixible or shoudl I chalk it up for a loss? I still get power when I plug it in with its normal converter, but all it does is flash the on "light ring" on the front. I pulled off the housing and nothing seems to be burnt of broke, but then again I am not a small electronics guy. any Ideas?

I have tried the original power source and hod no luck with it. I am not technical enough to open up my pc and swap hard drives, or at least had not considered that. Is that very hard? Do you think they have the same connection. I have a hp pavillion a1350n. For the WD to work I have to plug it into the outlet and the computer via the usb port. I really appreciate you getting back to me so quick.

I would try the correct voltage adapter and see if you can get it working.

You could remove the hard drive from the myBook drive and plug it into a PC to see if the hard drive is damaged or if it is the electronics/pcb that is inside the myBook drive.

You might be able to salvage just the hard drive (use it internally) and throw away (or keep for parts) the rest of the case/parts of the myBook unit.

It is not too difficult to remove the hard drive from the myBook drive.
Just make sure that if it is an ATA drive (my guess it probably is a PATA and not a SATA), it should work in about any PC, especially a newer one that will natively work with a hard drive as huge as a 320GB one.

Describe your Western Digital 250GB MyBook External USB 2.0 250 GB Hard Drive Problem Do you have a picture of the voltage and amperage adapter for the Western Digital 250GB MyBook External HD ?

I don't have a photo of the AC adapter, but if you look on it the Voltage and Amperage specifications are;

Input: 100-240VAC / 50~60Hz
Output: 12VDC / 2A

This means the Input power can be from 100 volts to 240 Volts AC, and at 50 to 60 Hertz

The Output power is 12 Volts DC at no more than 2 Amp's. (Amperes)

Asian Power Devices Inc. has a model DA-24B12 that fits these specs.
Also a Wattac AC adapter model number - BAO362Zl-8-A01 will work.

Otherwise just use a 12 Volt, 2 Amp power pack, with a positive on center contact, and a 2mm pin hole

External Hard Drive

If you plan to store movies on the HD, better buying a 1TB hard drive. WD Mybook is one of the best external HD.

To rip and store DVD movies into the hard disk you will need a specific software, like the ones below.

DVD Converter - convert DVD video to AVI/MPEG/DIVX files

Freeware converts DVD AVI MPEG WMV RM to MP3 or iPod Video

Movie2x Freeware DVD Converter Download

DVDx (freeware from labDV)
