Question about Toshiba 36A43 36" TV

1 Answer

Brightness I had the repair people come out about 6 months ago, and they turned a screw type thing on the lower right side of the tv. ( after they took back off) Tv got good and bright, they took it to there were white lines on the plain blue backround. The tv is slowly getting darker again, I am now at 100 percent brightness again, and things are starting to get dark . Is it dangerous to try and find the screw adjustment and turn it? I have an Idea of where to look. Tv is only about 3 or 4 years old. Thank you Lynda Rogers

thanks when they came out, they said it could last a year or so, but I hate to spend another 70,00 to have a screw turned, to make it last a little longer as the tvs are all going digital sooon. I guess I will have to get a lcd soon, but I have no Idea how to get this monster out of here as I live on a second floor. Guess I have to go to sears again to have delevery and removal. Thanks for the info. by the way how much is the transformer and is it worth getting fixed?

The adjustment is on the transformer = it is labeled "screen"
for screen voltage. If the tv is working normally, you should not
have to adjust at all.My recommendation is to get the tv fixed,
not "mask" the problem with the screen adjust. The brightness
limiter circuit is suspect or the transformer itself. Any product
that has an electric AC cord attached is potentially dangerous
not to mention the physical removal / reinstall of the back.....T.

Please rate this solution....................

My sharp 32c540 picture is dark since i bought it brand new 6 years ago.

You may just have to make a different kind of adjustment.

This is what is called a direct view or crt type TV.

Inside on the main board (see attached photo) is the "flyback" transformer.

Note the two little controls embedded in it----top one is focus--leave it alone.

Lower one is SCREEN and a very slight upwards or right adjustment will bring the overall brightness up.

You want to adjust it just till with brightness on set all the way up you have a normal picture.

Too much and you get excessive brightness and trace lines and or further too much shuts set off.

Some sets have two holes in back of cabinet and small tool can get in and adjust the LOWER or screen control and others the back has to be removed.

Lay set face down on padded surface, remove back screws and set upright---do not touch anything inside with set on when you make the adjustment--control is plastic and a plastic tool a good idea--I have used regular screwdriver but know what not to do.

Let me know if you have questions 98% chance just need the Master Screen bumped up a little bit.

TV won't stay on

Hello Fonzell!
Regarding the tv turning, my question is, do you hear a clicking sound? if so, it's most probable tio be your ballast, that might not have enough voltage to keep on with your lamp, and that's why it shuts off.
You could try replacing it and seeing if it resolves your issue, I believe they're running around 70 dlls..
have a great one ! :)

Dark picture

you know it sounds like the same problem i had....
look this is something you can try.... "turn the tv off and unplugg it!!!"'ll need to take out the lower front part of the tv......(where the speakers are to be exact) on each lower end you will find 2 screws..Be careful it will open to the side and there are many wires, i suggest you mark them to know where to put them back...then right in the middle there will be a black cover with about 5 screws..take them out....and look at the very bottom you'll see a thing with 6 pegs....the top ones are for the screen "DO NOT TOUCH THEM"...the ones on the bottom are for the adjust them...the left one it's for blue, the middle one it's for green and the last one it's for red...

I had the same problem after i moved....and after i re adjust that the tv looks super...
i hope that helps..:P

Horizontal line

It looks like the squeal or high pitch is produced by the flyback part # 257805. Also check the the secondary side of the power supply for around 130VDC if that voltage is found to be lower than 120VDC I would suggest to replace CP80 with a 100 mfd@250 vdc. Part # 218374 has these parts, for the flyback transformer just type in search for FLY-391, this one is cheaper than the genuine(257805) fly back.
Good Luck.

TV will not Power Up / Blinking Green Light on Power Button

May be the same problem Magnavox is having with their 27MF231d. I found the fix on this site and it took care of the same problem with my set. Not the easiest thing to do, but it worked. If you do not know how to solder, get some help with this one. If you take it to a Magnavox Authorized repair location, they will just replace the bad capacitor with another bad capacitor of the same type and voltage. The problem is they have a 25w capacitor where a 35w capacitor should be. Mine was bulging, with black tar looking stuff coming out of it. It was obviously bad. Follw the instructions below.

1. Remove all screws around perimeter, one screw at the lower right at (Side A/V), and 2 1”round plastic knob s.
2. Remove back cover
3. At lower left side remove 2 screws for On/Off switch cut tie wrap that holds wire down for free movement.
4. Disconnect wire connector to side A/V at lower right side
5. Disconnect wire connector to right side circuit Board
6. Disconnect wire connector to left side circuit board
7. Remove the 2 mounting brackets upper left and upper right 2 screws each.
8. Remove 3 screws each side of the metal box in the middle
9. Fold back metal tape off bottom and top of metal box
10. 1 wire connector at top of box I left connected
11. Flip metal box over towards top of Tv. Be careful of wire at top thats still connected.
12. On left side in box is power supply board
13. Towards bottom of board you should see the numbers C2081 and C2074
14. Remove the six screws holding down power supply board
15. Flip board down towards bottom of Tv.
16. Unsolder capacitors replace with new 1200uf 35v and 2200uf 35v 105°C radial capacitors
17. Capacitors should be around 1/2” to 5/8” dia. X 1.25 long appox. 2 Wires come out of one end should be .030 dia.
18. Reassemble in reverse order and enjoy

In my case, the adjustment was available from outside the TV. Sortof. On the rear of the TVabout 2 inches to the right of the coax in, there are two vertical slits on a little protrusion. Inside the slits are the two adjustment screws. The lower screw adjusts brightness, the upper screw adjusts focus. I spend 30 minutes popping the case apart just to find that I could not access the adjustment screws from inside. Lo and behold, they made them easily accessible from the outside. On a side note, I have never seen a TV designed as poorly as this on the inside. You have to literally reach in and unplug things just to get the back off. All the electronics save the tube itself are mounted to the rear chassis. On all other TV's I've seen (taken apart, rather), all the electronics are in the FRONT part of the chassis so that they move WITH the tube.
