Problem for Panasonic DMR-EH55 DVD Recorder / HDD Recorder

Loss of TVGOS signal ...

Here's the problem ... the Panasonic DMR-EH55S has an analog tuner, and can only receive an analog signal. The TVGOS (and Auto-Time) signal had been broadcast by local PBS stations in an analog format. But as PBS stations converted to digital broadcast signals, they turned off the analog TVGOS signal. Now NBC & CBS affilitates around the US have taken up broadcasting the TVGOS signla, however, they are only broadcasting the digital version of it, and usually on the QAM band, so you need a digital receiver to recieve the signal. The cable companies and the stations don't want to take a step back and find a way to broadcast the signal in an analog format again.

Now I'm told, though I have not tried it yet, that if you swtich to the digital antenna signal (using a converter box and a digital antenna) and connect that to the DMR-EH55S, you might get the TVGOS content again. But that's a big maybe ... I'm not ready to spend the money myself to find out.

I also discovered that Panasonic stopped making the DVRs after they built the DMR-EH55S ... and they stopped producing that unit in 2006. All because the satallite companies and cable companies all had their own DVRs.

But back to the issue ... if anyone finds a solution to this I'd be happy to hear it.

In most cases, you won't have to get a digital antenna, since the "digital switch" just changes the frequencies on which the networks broadcast. Spend the $50 to get a converter box and hook it up between your antenna and the DVR. If you still don't get the TVGOS signal, then you will have to get the antenna.

Please see these similar discussions for additional details - a Lot of people are having this problem:

This is not going to be an easy fix, and the problem is not with ourDVRs. The consensus is that the problem is with how the TVGOS information is being transmitted (or nottransmitted). The solution is going to require more than just aconverter box since people who have them are also having the sameproblem.

You'll probably get tired of dealing with useless customer service people, if you haven't already. If you want to try contacting some higher-ups in Rovi (Magnavision), the company that owns the TVGOS and TVguide.com, here is some contact information

**The email address for the legal department was listed on the web siteas "legal@rovicorp.net" but the email got bounced back. I tried"legal@rovicorp.com" and the email went through. I don't know ifanyone got it, but at least it seems to be a real email address). (Wonder if it's really a "mistake" that they have the wrong emailaddress for contacting the legal department?)

I sent an email to ALL of the addresses below and will send it again if I don't hear anything in the next couple of days.
I'll update if anything happens...
