My ge sxs was making a lound noise and when the noise stopped the freezer stopped freezing. This is a GE side by side refrigerator model # GSS22JEPA . What should I check so I can fix it?

See if freezer fan is running when the unit is on. If you hear no fan when it's running. You probably need an evaporator fan motor.
Also check for ice or frost build up around fan.
Is there frost build up on back wall of freezer? If so, remove back wall of freezer and see if evaporator coils are full of frost. If so, it's not defrosting. Check the defrost heater for continuity. If it's open replace defrost heater. It's at the bottom of coils with a wire to each end.
A fan not working can lead to a frost build up. This is usually not as heavy as when it's not defrosting. If coils were plugged from top to bottom, it's probably a defrost problem.
Fan will normally run when compressor is on. If not you need to check for voltage to fan. If it has voltage, replace fan if it still doesn't run. If no voltage suspect board in back. You can sometimes see a burned resistor on the board. If board is burned, you must replace fan motor and board.

The fan is running, but the ice maker doesn't work; the fresh food side is cold the freezer is cold at the bottom but not at the top where the ice maker is. The ice maker has water flowing into it but does not get cold enough to freeze the ice. Can you help?
I checked the back wall and the evaporator coils were full of frost I used a blow dryer to melt the fronst. I had a friend look at it and they said it could be the motherboard or the evaporator fan since the fan under the ice maker isn't on when you turn the light off on the freezer side. They are good at electronics but not an expert. Could this be accurate? I'll check the heater for continuity and let you know what I find out. Thanks for your help
