Problem with Standard Televisions

After trying to install STB picture geometry on TV is distorted

I have a Panasonic 66cm Tau Giga Widescreen TV (TX-66PW150A), which has been working fine for longer than 5 years. I bought a STB (Strong SRT 5405E) and tried to install it. At the beginning I couldn't get image and I noticed that the STB was set to 1080i, so I changed it to 576i & then the TV turned off by itself. I couldn't turn it on again, so I unplugged everything. After a while I connected only the TV to the wall (as before installing the STB) and turned it on. It worked, but I noticed that the image was distorted. The geometry of the screen was not as before. Not sure how to explain this but it looks as if in Zoom mode.

So the first thing I did was to change the aspect ratio but it didn't help. In every aspect ratio mode the screen is full. In fact, I noticed that the text at the top left corner of the screen that shows you what aspect ratio are you selecting is not completely visible anymore. i.e. can only see the ''9'' because the ''16:'' is outside of the screen. Same thing happens if you change the volume. At the bottom you can only see ''olume'' as the ''V'' is outside of the screen. Looking at vertical lines that are close to the left or right side of the screen I noticed that these lines are bowing in, so lines look like )||(

Is this something I can fix using service menus, or something similar? If so, how do I access it?
Or is this a permanent damage to my TV? What could have caused it?

While it is possible to damage a TV by feeding it a signal with incorrect sync settings, it is unusual these days.  It has probably reverted to a different display mode.  I would try to look in the manual or the menus for a "Factory Default Settings" option or similar.  Once you restore the factory settings, the picture should return to normal, although you may have to change some settings back to the way you had them before the reset.  Good Luck!

Apparently, doing this either fries something in the TV or somehow permanently alters a configuration setting. There is other evidence out there of this and there is a blog entry that goes into quite some detail: http://blog.ambor.com/2011/09/panasonic-tx-66pw1050a-service-menu.html
