Cannot eject western digital passport

I have just brought a western passport hard drive and started to back up my mac using the time machine, deciding halfway through, i cancelled it.
now the hard drive on the finder screen says time machine instead of the name i put for it. now i can't eject the hard drive ''the volume cannot be ejected because it is currently in use. '' this is rather annoying as i haven't even used it yet. is there any way to reset the hard drive. thanks

I've had similar problems with external drives. First of all if you have OS 10.4 it will recognize and format external drives that OS 10.5 will not. However the most recent update fixed some issues, so download the most current update by going to the apple and 'software update'. Next, if time machine has stamped the drive, then it will always 'see' the WD drive as the default backup and will write data to it periodically in automatic backup mode. If there is no data on the drive, or if you don't want to save the data then you could reformat the drive (first turn OFF time machine) by going to utilities and then 'disk utility'. If not, then try going to utilities and then use the 'air port' utility to work with the drive as it should be listed on the left as a time capsule.

check the compatibility of the external hard drive. It might not support Mac. Probabely you external hard is in NTFS format and you need to reformat/re-partition it for using it in Mac OS.

You can disable the sleep timer in the settings menu. Details can be found on page 34 of the product manual:

Passport drives are generally used for backups so they like to turn themselves off to extend their life cycle. If you want to use an external drive for frequent media use, I recommend WD Elements.

I have a wd used on a mac and would like to use it on a eepc as well, but it is not working...I can't open it on the eepc

The disk-drive might be formatted for usage _only_ with Mac OS X.
Copy all the files from it to your Mac's disk-drive.
Move the Passport to any PC, and "format" the disk for use by Windows.
Move the Passport to your Mac, and copy all the "saved" files back onto the Passport.
Move the Passport to your EEPC, and you should be able to use it, and to see the filenames that you copied from your Mac.

Didn't eject and remove USB. Now can't access the Passport HD.

Go to Applications -> Utilities Folder -> Disk Utility.
Pick the media on the left and then go to the Erase tab on the right side of dialog.
Pick MSDOS format and the drive should work on both PCs and Macs now.

MacBookpPro osx10.4.11 doesn't recognize new WD passport

the problem is that your western digital operates using the NTFS (New Technology File System) which is the standard file system of Windows. Apple macs is not interopable with native NTFS therefore you need to install a read-write NTFS file-system driver on your mac.

an excellent free mac NTFS driver can be found here-
