Hello Linda,
I'm sure I can help you, but I would like to know what kind of vehicle it is. You are correct in thinking it may be your radiator fan, however this fan only runs when the vehicle is warmed up. There should be a relay, and fuse for your fans. If the fuse is blown you may have a bad cooling motor, or a short circuit in the fan wiring. It could be as easy as a bad fan relay, these motors draw a lot of current, and the relay can fail over time.
Please let me know what type of vehicle this is, and I can narrow your search further.
You did not mention the model car or year of car. There are two types of cooling fan controls. 1: The fan clutch is controlled by a thermal sensor in which case the sensor is bad or the fan clutch is slipping. 2: There is a fan clutch that is controlled electrically and the upper limit sensor may be bad or the clutch solenoid is defective. A rare cause is a computer SW glitch in the engine computer that is not enabling the fan to the ON state for high temp.
There is a switch that monitors the coolant temperature and perhaps this is faulty and your fan is not being turned on. If your car has been serviced lately (rad replaced) the fan may not have plugged back in. Follow the wires from the fan motor, there is usually a connector inline as well as a connector at the sensor. All models are different but this is a free and easy first step. Keep your finger away from the fan blades, they can start unexpectantly.

This is most likely caused by a bad sensor in the radiator. I have never repaired this on a ford focus so I can't tell you where the sensor is located but if you find the sensor and then make a jumper wire and remove the wire from the sensor and jump the two wires together and turn the car ON (don't start the car) if the fan runs, the sensor is bad and must be replaced.

The main reason for the over heating of the audi tt is to do with the water pump. The propeller within the first type of water pumps is made of plastic. This was to prevent corrosion, however was never designed to last longer than 5 years. What you need to do is purchase the new style water pump. These new style water pumps have been designed with a metallic propellor which should resolve the overheating. Let us know how you get on.
SOURCE: The radiator cooling fan is not working. Upon
assuming fuse and relay are good..no fan should be running when the engine is cool/cold, the only time the fan should be running when it reach over operation temperature which then the fan kick on to bring the temperature back down to it operation temperature. both fan work in sync with one another, addition cooling is needed when the ac is running. when the last time have you replace thermostat and Thermos sensor/switch. I would replace both unit if you have not done so. The thermos/switch will turn the fan on when it reach certain temperature and cut off when it sense the temperature drop in the engine.
Testimonial: "Very good advice. I replaced the cooling fan myself and saved a lot of money. Everything is seems to be working. Thanks."

Check the fan itself for free turning--if it grinds or is hard to turn, replace the fan motor. The engine heat sensor reports temperature to the computer which turns on the relay and it turns on the fan motor. If you have A/C, turn it on--that should force the fan on all the time the car is running. If that works, then replace the sensor. If you don't have A/C, take a chance on the sensor--it's not too expensive. Wrap the threads with several turns of teflon tape when installing and don't over-tighten.

BOTH!... when you find out WHY the fan is not operating, let us know... OK?
