Because there is a pattern pw set up on the phone you will have to do a hard reset. Unfortunately a hard reset will erase all downloads, uploaded programs or any cool stuff that was added to the phone; so in essence you will be wiping it clean...like a brand new phone.
If you're still with me, please follow these steps:
Turn off the device
Remove the battery for about 10 seconds, remove sim card and sd card then reinsert all the battery being last.
Press and hold Volume Up button and Power Button simultaneously till the screen turns up and Samsung logo blinks for two times.
Then release the power key but keep the Volume Up key pressed till you see Android system recovery screen.
select wipe data / factory reset using Volume Down key to highlight.

You have to call the service provider such as ATT or whoever he had. They will want to talk to him if it is his phone and he brought it from them. They will reset the pincode and you must keep it written down someplace.
