Question about Xerox WorkCentre 385 Laser Printer

1 Answer

Engine failure notification

Xerox WorkCentre 385

I was receiving a fax and the machine stopped with an "Engine Failure" notification on the display. I shut the machine down and this morning, just to see what would happen as I was about to take it off the shelf and pitch it, the fax I was receiving printed out of memory. Plastic pieces have been falling off this machine for the past 2 years (its over 7 years old). Time to toss it? What is an "Engine Failure" ? Does this machine "have a devil in it"?

Re: Engine failure notification

Yep. Most likely you could replace it for the price of repair

Need ubuntu linux ppd driver for workcentre 385

It doesn't look good. The following web-site called it a paperweight.

If you have good windows drivers for this, then you might be able to share it off another system and print via Samba.

You'd be better off trading it, donating it, ebay-ing it, or keep it as a fax/ copy system.

Brother, on the other hand makes good multi-function printers and they have very good linux support for their printers. If you're casting around for a replacement, take a look at the MFC-4800.

The first thing I would suggest is to test the phone cord. Remove it and plug it in to a phone and see if it's working.

Hi Viper, Thanks for the tip. I'm having the same problem with my Xerox...

Printer would not feed paper no matter how many sheets were in the bin or how clean the printer. I even cleaned the roller. The issue was I just needed a little more tension on the roller that pulled the paper in.

I removed the rear access door (see manual). Off to the left near the feeder roller you will see a spring. What I did is mover the spring to the END of the plastic arm that it is attached to (if it is missing have a bigger problem). If you have moved your printer around a bit, the spring may have slipped down on to the arm and is no longer sitting at the end. This will extend the spring another 1/16 of an inch ...and that is all all it took for me. My printer will now feed a single sheet of paper with no issues. BTW: I put a drop of glue on it after so it would not slip off.

My Xerox Workcentre 385

Your probably got the copy key (readout) set at 10 copies. Try to go to the Xerox site and query for the instruction manual, this works most of the time. This will tell you how to negate the multiple copies

Replace Drum

your toner has nothing to do with sending/receiving faxes. If you can print to the xerox...something is wrong with the software..
delete and re-install software..Xerox website is useless
check the black sensor that dangles into the paper tray. wiggle it up and down, ahten resintalled the tray

Can receive faxes but are coming through partially or distorted.

Most receive problems relate to phone lines, But yours doesn't.
I would start here.

  1. Press the [Menu / Exit] button on the Control Panel. 'System Data' will be displayed on the Display Screen.
  2. Press the [Left] or [Right] arrow button until 'Memory Clear' is displayed.
  3. Press the [Enter] button.
  4. Press the [Left] or [Right] arrow button to select one of the following items to be cleared from memory:
    • System ID: Clears the fax number and name from the machine’s memory.
    • System Data: Restores all options that can be modified to the factory default.
    • PhoneBK / Memory: Clears the speed dial or group dial numbers stored in the machine's memory. In addition, all scheduled job operations that have been reserved are canceled.
    • TX-RX Journal: Clears all records of fax transmissions and receptions.

NOTE: To exit without clearing the item, press the [Menu / Exit] button.

  5. Press the [Enter] button.
  6. If necessary, repeat steps 4 and 5 to clear another item from memory.
  7. Press the [Stop] button to return to the Standby mode.

Using Xerox Workcentre 385 with Mac OS X 10.5

I went to the Xerox site and there is not a driver listed for a Mac platform for that product.
Wish I had a better answer for you.
