If it does not go away on its own, try pressing the menu button one more time, or scrolling down to exit. if you're in a submenu, hit back until you're at the main menu then wait. if it doesn't go away, scroll and select exit. if it's a plain black box, try removing the power cable from the back for 10 seconds, and plugging it back in again.

Black rectangular is covering the lower part of the screen. think I may have turned on a block and can not figure out how to turn it off.

It sounds like you turned on the captions for the hearing impaired, go to menu and scroll down to captions, press the right arrow 1,2,3,off make sure cursor is over off and press enter that should get rid of the black box, some remotes have the caption button separate from the menu.

How to set your Desktop Screen Resolution?

Greetings, Welcome to Fixya!
So you need to adjust your Desktop Screen Resolution ey!!! It's a good thing you visited as today we are going to discuss just that.
We will be using our monitor to it's full potential, which will ensure we see the best picture our monitor can provide.

Follow the steps below:

1.)Right click on your desktop screen.
2.)A rectangular menu box appears.
3.)Select Properties, found right at the bottom of the menu box.
4.)Select the Settings Tab, found on the top right hand side of the window.
5.)On the bottom left hand side you will notice a slider bar under the heading Screen Resolution.
6.)Move this slider to the left to decrease the Screen resolution, less detailed, move the slider to the right to increase the Screen Resolution, more detailed.
7.)Ensure that the colour quality is set to highest, to give a more detailed and clearer picture!

Below: The window, see the slider bar on the bottom left and the colour quality on the right!

We have a Sharp Aquos TV with an annoying black box in the upper left hand corner of the screen. How do we get rid of it?

You may have PIP or picture in picture turned on and set to a input that has nothing connected to it. That's why the box is black. There should be a button on the remote for PIP. Try to turn it off. Or turnit off in the menu.

There is a rectangular black box across the screen - it goes away when I use the favorite button and have multi screens showing - it returns when I close out the favorites. Color, sound, picture quality...

in the customer menu--find the closed caption settings---you will most likely find the set has been set to TEXT 1---with the remote select either CC1 or OFF---the black box was for text (books) and was not ever used much---usually someone engages it by accident

Vertical pinch on left hand side of crt

You mean the picture on the left side is curved out? Or is it restricted to the very top and very bottom?
If you have the curve problem, look in the menu and see if there is a pincushion control and a pin cushion balance. Adjust the balance until both sides curve the same, then adjust the pin cushion control to remove the curve.
If you are only having the problem in the corners, look in the menu for a corner correction control and play around with it to see if it corrects your problem. If the monitor has no OSD (on-screen-display), then it may be too old to have these controls. You may have to open the unit and see if there are any physical adjustments (little potientiometers). You might want to leave this to someone who knows what they are doing since the high voltage circuit can have 25-35 kV. Considering the price of CRT monitors, you might be able to find a new one for under $50.

This is from the user manual for the monitor. You can download a copy from hp here:

There are four adjustable options on the OSD settings screen: Lock OSD settings, Timeout, H Position, and V Position.
To change OSD settings:
1 Open the OSD setting screen under the Advanced menu. See
“Using the On Screen Display” on page 25.
2 Press the Browse buttons to select the option you want to adjust.
3 Press the Select button to check the option.
To change OSD lock setting:
1 Press the Browse button to select yes (lock) or no (unlock). The
setting is automatically saved when you change the value.
2 Choose Exit sub-menu and press the Select button to return to
the OSD Main Menu or press the Menu button to exit OSD.
NOTE: Once OSD is locked, all OSD functions including the
shortcut buttons are disabled. If OSD is locked, pressing
any button on the monitor directly opens the Lock OSD
settings window so that you can unlock OSD.

Unwanted Message

Generic Answer:

With most models of these monitors, hold in the menu key for more than 10 seconds.

If the above does not work, call the manufacture tech support. The monitor may need service.
