Try unplugging BOTH the repeater and the router, Then, plug the router back in and let it establish a connection. Then, plug the repeater in and let it reestablish the connection.

Let us fix your problem with Netgear extender, there may be many issues behind it like:-
1-Your wireless router is not being configured to your Netgear range extender
2-Netgear extender installation failed
3-you are not able to setup
4-Netgear range is blinking orange and you lost the internet connectivity.
Some steps to troubleshoot your Netgear extender:-
1-Reset your Netgear range extender with the help of paper clip.
2-press the reset key/hole on the back side of your extender and hold it for atleast 30 sec, release it when all lights start blinking.
Note:- while doing reset make sure your router should be turn on.
after that try to setup it as your wish.

I havea Netgear WN3000 RP extender allowing my laptop to work in the house away from my work computer. Now its asking for a username and password which I dont have.

The question is what is asking for the user name and password. The router would not do that unless you are trying to log on to the router. The modem maybe asking you to provide that info for the service provider account but that would be true with the tower too.

How do I retrieve my password?

Passwords are only known by the person who did put it in.
But most routers and wireless access point, have a possibility to reset the device and then the standard admin password will become active again. For that you can look into the manual, or even on the device itself, where it says how to reset the device and what will be the default admin pass word. Be aware, after that you have to reinstall the whole device, so if you don't have the manual at hand or not enough knowledge, please leave it as it is, if you still need the device, till someone can help you.

I cannot connect my hg532 wifi range extender to my Echolife wn3000rp router

The HG532 is a broadband router, not wireless range extender.

So it will not connect up with another router.

You need to buy a range extender.

Your connection is limited

What router and where is it that you are connecting the Extender to? An extender is not a router. You need a router to extend the wifi signal from.
