The timer usually continues to run but the contacts to the motor get corroded so that it won't get the power necessary to spin. The power needed for the spin cycle is far greater than needed for other cycles is why the spin cycle fails first.
Very rarely will a timer motor that works for the rest of the cycle stop for just the spin, but it could happen.
Just buy a new timer assembly. Get the model number and use Google; but look at several offerings noting the part number. If you find a cheap price but a different part number, buy the one that matches the factory number as best you can.
While you are working on the machine, you probably should replace the drive belt, if it has one.

check heating element (rear of drum at the bottom) for open circuit, replace if needed, occasionally the timer will start to click round continuously, indicating the machine has a fault, the machine shuts down waiting for the water to heat up, elements available at most appliance shops but you may need to order specially?
SOURCE: Will not drain or spin
Unless you jarred the machine it's the timer. You can check this by bypassing the lid switch and seeing if it will cycle.

it sounds like your water valve is bad or you pressure switch is bad or hose from pressure switch to tub is cloged
SOURCE: washing machine won't rinse or spin
sounds as if you have a faulty lid switch, for safety reasons if the machine doesnt think the lid is closed it willnot spin/drain the waer out.

Your lid switch needs replacing.
Part number 3949237 available at any applinace parts store.
If the unit is washing properly, as far as you can tell, but it won't stop spinning, then I would have a professional look at the control panel and timer to be diagnosed because there seems to be in miscommunication.
