Have you removed the protective parts? Ensure carousel is in correct position for loading carts. Ensure tram lines down the sides line up perfectly. Don't be afraid to push the cart home firmly.

Have 5400- needs new black ink. How do I get to the instructions on this

You can purchase cartridges online from www.lexmark.com. Lexmark cartridges are also available in some large office supply stores.
To replace a cartridge on your printer, please follow the steps below:

1. Make sure the printer is on.

2. Open the printer cover. The print cartridge carrier moves and stops at the loading position, unless the All-in-One is busy.

3. Remove your used cartridge.

4. Firmly insert your new cartridge.

5. Close the printer cover. Your printer will then ask you to align the cartridges.

Sometimes the ink cartridge carrier won't automatically move to its loading position even when the printer is on and the cover is open. Follow the steps below:

1. Unplug the printer from the power source.

2. With the cover open, hold the solid white strip that connects from the carrier assembly to the ink cartridge carrier and gently slide the cartridge carrier to the center of the printer.

3. Remove the used cartridges.

4. Load the new cartridges. Close the cover.

5. Plug the printer back to the power source.

Printer reads no cartridge when one is in

Hello

Remove the ink cartridge (or cartridges) from the printer.

Turn the cartridges over so you can see the copper foil portion of the cartridge casing. You'll see many neatly punched holes in this copper tape. Look closely: if any of the holes seem to be torn, with jagged edges, or if there are tears anywhere else on the copper foil, the cartridge has been physically damaged. Replace it. If the foil appears to be all right, continue.

Moisten the tip of your finger. Gently rub it over the small print head on the bottom of the cartridge. The print head will look like a small plastic or glass window. Rub away any old, dried ink that may have collected on the print head. Old, dried ink has "killed" many a cartridge, particularly if you haven't used the printer in a while. Use your finger tip rather than a towel or a cotton swab: Your fingertip won't leave stray fibers on the print head which could cause further problems.

Seat the cartridges back into the printer. Firmly snap shut the cartridge carrier. Let the printer take the cartridge head back to the proper starting position on the track. Close your printer service bay.

Turn off your printer. Unplug it from the power source for 10 seconds. Plug it back in and turn on the printer.

Follow your onscreeen software instructions on aligning the cartridge heads. The alignment prompt comes up each time the printer detects the cartridge has been replaced or moved. Be sure to note whether this is a new or an old cartridge when you answer the dialog questions.

Use a brand new cartridge, one that is freshly packaged, if the alignment process on the old cartridge fails. This will tell you, definitely, whether the problem is a cartridge problem or a larger printer problem.

Replace the printer if no cartridge--regardless of age-- will successfully align in the printer.

Mfc 845 will not with black ink. The ink cartridge is new. Will print in color. I ran it thru the cleaning cycle. Only prints the top half of sentences.

This sounds like an alignment issue. Please refer to this support artilcle and follow the instructions given there to align the cartridge. You may have to reseat the cartridge, by carefully following these instructions. Make sure the lock release lever is firmly engaged. (clicks).
Otherwise, you have as mentioned cleaned the print head, though you could try cleaning again if the alignment doesn't correct the error. For other support help, please see here.

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.
If I've managed to answer your question or solve a problem, please take just a moment to rate this post....thanks!

I have a hpdeskjet f2180 and need to change the ink cartridges. How do I get to the cartridges to change them !

    Installing print cartridges
    1. Make sure the HP All-in-One is on. CAUTION: If the HP All-in-One is off when you open the print cartridge door to access the print cartridges, the HP All-in-One will not release the cartridges for changing. You might damage the HP All-in-One if the print cartridges are not docked safely when you try to remove them.
    2. Open the print cartridge door. Figure 1: Opening the print cartridge door c00906461.jpg Make sure the print carriage moves to the center. If it does not move to the center, turn the device off and then turn it back on again.
    3. Remove the tape from both cartridges. Figure 2: Removing the tape from a cartridge c00651128.gif CAUTION: Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or re-tape the cartridges. Figure 3: Copper-colored contacts c00651129.gif

    7. Close the print cartridge door. Figure 8: Closing the print cartridge door c00906462.jpg
Aligning print cartridges The HP All-in-One prompts you to align cartridges every time you install or replace a print cartridge. You can also align the print cartridges at any time from the control panel or by using the software you installed with the HP All-in-One. Aligning the print cartridges ensures high-quality output. NOTE: If you remove and reinstall the same print cartridge, the HP All-in-One will not prompt you to align the print cartridges. The HP All-in-One remembers the alignment values for that print cartridge, so you do not need to realign the print cartridges. To align newly installed print cartridges
    1. Make sure you have letter or A4 unused plain white paper loaded in the input tray. The HP All-in-One prints a print cartridge alignment sheet. NOTE: If you have colored paper loaded in the input tray when you align the print cartridges, the alignment will fail. Load unused plain white paper into the input tray, and then try the alignment again.
    2. Load the print cartridge alignment sheet print side down on the left front corner of the glass with the top of the page to the left. Figure 9: Loading the alignment sheet c00906464.jpg
    3. Press the Scan (c00906465.jpg ) button. The HP All-in-One aligns the print cartridges. Recycle or discard the print cartridge alignment sheet.
