You can also consider purchasing a standalone bobbin winder (Sidewinder) for ~$30 at fabric stores or online. After nearly 50 years of sewing, I just recently bought one and am thrilled to be able to wind bobbins without unthreading my machine. Also, it should save wear and tear on your machine, or in your case, work when you need it.

Please follow the logic checks and possible corrections:

1. Check the winder shaft for a sticking or a stuck condition. If stuck or sticking, add a drop or two of mineral spirits to the winder shaft and the winder support bushing. This will generally release the winder shaft.
If the winder shaft becomes free wheeling, clean off excess solvent and apply a drop of Bernina machine oil which is typically a class 68 machine oil. You can also use a common white mineral sewing machine oil.
Do not use WD-40 or 3 in 1 oil!
If WD-40 had been used prior to the winder seizure then you'll know why....Removing sticky WD-40 residues requires further measures.

2. If only the rubber wheel has hardened, you will need to replace the winder hub with a new hub and replaceable winder ring or the entire winder can be replaced. There are some very good after-market parts available online.

3. If the winder parts are good and you are describing a condition where the hand-wheel will not release so that the machine drives while trying to wind a bobbin, this would requite another question and detailed answer... SewTechnical Home

My Bernina 440QE will not wind a bobbin.

Hmm, I have a 440 bur have not had this problem. However, I do most of my bobbin winding on a standalone bobbin winder (called Sidewinder). They are available several places, JoAnn's, Amazon, etc. for about $30. You can get one that will take batteries or a power cord. Saves wear n tear on your machine, plus you can wind multiple bobbins quickly, and you don't need to unthread your machine. Just an idea.

How do I turn off THE BOBBIN winder on a Bernette 65 sewing machine?

The bobbin spindle needs to be moved to the left in the slot to disengage the winding mechanism. (It may be easier to do this with the bobbin on the spindle. The bobbin and spindle should be moved to the right after putting the bobbin on for winding.)

The directions and pictures for winding the bobbin are on page 30-31 of the manual. The manual is available from Bernina on their support page for the out-of-print Bernette machine manuals: .http://www.bernina.com/en-US/Support-US/Out-of-Print-Manuals/bernette-manuals/Bernette-Sewing-Machines . The direct link to the Bernette 65 manual is here: http://www.bernina.com/getdoc/6d2754b8-af09-4edb-a6a6-7a4c57965b8d/bernette-55-65-80e-90e .

I hope this helps.

930. How do I wind a new bobbin?

You didn't provide the brand name of the machine. I was unable to locate any information as to a Necchi 930, so I'm assuming it is a Bernina 930 Record. If so, you can download a free manual here:

Here is a YouTube video showing how to wind a bobbin on a Bernina (newer than a 930), but still somewhat similar. The only thing I would recommend is, do not wind the bobbin as fast as she does in the video--sometimes that will cause the thread to stretch while winding.

I have a new Bernina 350 and the bobbin doesn't wind on evenly. If left to do it automatically it ends up wrapped around the bobbin spool. Is this normal?

the thread has to be pretty tight around the bobbin tension guide
but I would suggest if you can't get it to wind correctly to have it check to see if there is a problem with it

How do I use the button hole foot on the Bernina 807 minimatic?

There isn't an automatic button hole on this machine. You can do it manually. Thread the bobbin thread as usual, but put it through the little hole on the hook in the bobbin case. Set the stitch length between 0 and 1, like a nice satin stich. Set the needle position to the far left and the stitch width to 2. Sew down the left side. Center the needle, set the width to 4 and lower the feed dogs, stitch about 6 stitches across the bottom. Then reverse the direction, set the needle to the right, stitch width to 2 and go back up the right side. Lower the feed dogs again, set a wide stitch and finish the top.

Another good option is to buy a universal presser foot shank from Bernina and then attach an old cam type buttonhole attachment from Singer. They make beautiful buttonholes and you can even do a keyhole button hole.

Bernina 180 - winding thread onto bobbin spool

If the bobbin winder spindle turns freely by hand and the macine runs fine with the foot controller then it may be the small motor that runs the bobbin winder that is at fault. If this is the case then your local service tech should be able to relace it. It is not a very costly part so don't be to worried.
